Have you tried "jumping" it?

Check your ground connections and the connections to the starter.

If you're an MT, check the starter interlock switch on the clutch pedal.

I was thinking the "buzzing" sound the OP described might be the starter solenoid attempting to operate.

Possibly... I was thinking more the sounds when the electronics are energized or the buzzer on the instrument cluster sounds for a few seconds.
But if the buzzing sound occurs when he turns the key to the 'start' position, then I agree that it could be the starter.
Could be hearing the motor spinning and the solenoid isn't firing the drive gear forward, or the starter is functioning properly and spinning the ring gear but not the flywheel (rare instance but its occurred a couple times).
As you know... situations like this can be tricky to narrow down without being there to hear in person.

Mr.We$t- I'm assuming you have an auto tranny.
There is a transmission range switch to ensure you are in park or neutral so you can't start the car in gear.
If you put the car in park, does the 'P' indicator light illuminate?

^From the info provided it sounds like a compression problem. Usually trouble with starting the car when it gets warmed up is an indicator of lost compression. However, you might want to check if you have the upgraded starter. 2003-2005 rx8s come with a weak starter. When was the last time you changed spark plugs, wires, and coils?
