weird sound

Hey i was wondering if someone can help me diagnose whats wrong with my rx8. While accelerating and reversing it sounds as though someone metal is shaking under my car or rattling around in something. To me it sounds like a metal plate is vibrate really fast on a bunch of loose screws, but i wanted to get some other opinions. anyone got any ideas?

I know that sound exactly.

However, I don't know what it will mean to you.

My 8 has been making that sound for over 2 years. It's from a 3 week period after my cat failed. I borrowed one of the BHR prototype midpipes from a friend for that 3 weeks. This was before the internal integrity was improved. During those 3 weeks, a piece of the resonator broke off and is stuck in my cat-back. I heard it as it snapped under the hot exhaust on a cold morning and rattled back into the cat-back. It hasn't bothered me enough to bother going after it, so it's pretty much going to stay there until I get an aftermarket cat back. It rattles forward on decel, backward under exhaust pressure. Sounds identical. (I'll probably get crap for ignoring it, but since it's only audible at really low speeds, backing out of a parking space, at stop signs, etc... and my tolerance for annoyance is higher than most, I shrug it off easily. It's not reachable from the tips or the upstream side, stuck in the bend just before the can.)

So, since my situation is pretty unique there, this might not help you. However, if you have had any aftermarket exhaust components, especially any aftermarket midpipe or cat, this could be something that broke off like mine. If you have a fully stock system, AND you have no power loss at all, then it could be parts of the cat? If you do have power loss, then it might be engine seals...

update

Okay i just got back from mazda and they told me it is the cat. they said that my cat is in bad condition and needs to be replaced. But apparently since it passed emissions they are not going to replace it. Sorta rattled about that, cause its under warranty so it should be covered... :S

Ignoring a failing cat can lead to other problems, including engine damage.

It's a federally mandated warranty (US) also, so if they acknowledged that it is bad and you are still within the warranty period, they can't legally deny you.

You used KMS for mileage though. Are you in the US? Or not? Not familiar with any "georgetown" outside of the US.

Well, we can't fight it for you, and we can't make you fight.

So you have to decide to take action and argue it yourself or take what they hand to you.

You have rights, but it's up to you to act on them.

If you change your settings in the control panel to auto-subscribe to threads you start and post in, but have the update frequency set to no-update, you can quickly see threads you have posted in or started by checking your thread subscriptions.

Just a tip.
