Ok, right off the bat this question may have been asked 1000 times and I'm apologizing up front...but I'm a newbie...

Have a 2004 RX8 I bought new, love the car and except for the normal replacing the engine at 40k it's really been great and I still want to keep it!

Lately if it's warmed up and I stop it and then get back in quickly (filling up with gas or whatever) it acts like it's flooded and has a hard time starting. If it's cold it doesn't seem to be a problem. A couple of times (yesterday being the last) it dies on me while idling at a stoplight and I can't get it restarted. If I let it cool down it then starts right up. Replaced plugs, wires and coils in January so they're new. I'm not getting any check engine lights so there doesn't seem to be a problem there. My son in law is my mechanic, but Mazda is not his forte so he's aking around for ideas, but I thought I would see if anybody here could help.

Thanks, yes it has the latest updates. I've looked through the site and they all seem to be about the flooding caused by not allowing the engine to warm up completely, my problem seems to be happening after it's been driven for a while and completely warmed up, then shut down and started again within a few minutes. Maybe it's the same issue, but it seems like a different problem.

I'll keep looking through them and hopefully find something. Thanks again!

Sounds like the same problem I had. Luckily for me, it was an easy fix and the problem ended up being me still having the original, weak and puny starter from day 1. After that was replaced, my 8 started up on the dime. I'd recommend checking to see if you have the upgraded starter and upgrade to a high CCA battery as well if you haven't already.

Your Engine is dying. Sorry for bringing you the bad news. Nothing to do with the starter, dying at Stop Light means one of the metal seal inside is failing/not sealing well.

Starter can help get your Engine starts better/faster, but it doesn't help if it's dying.

Reman(u said u got one at 40k right? how many miles u have now?) it's always a hit or miss. these engines are build by hand (have to) so it heavily depends on the builder if he used the right parts/build it right in the first places. For example, Instead of using N3Z4-11-C10D, he ran out of all other side seals at the time and that was his last engine for the day, and he have just couple N3Z1-11-C10D. and he used that. there u go. Bad Engine build, it will work, but not for too long.

Sorry for posting in the wrong section, obviously I didn't check close enough! Thanks for the ideas we'll keep checking it out, this engine has about 50k on it..I was hoping they had fixed the issue before they put this engine in but maybe not. I hope its something else!
