Transmission problems?
I have an 04 with 124,000 miles on it...when i shift into fourth gear at high revs it makes a crunching noise and i can feel in the gear shifter a crunch....like im forcing it into gear even when the clutch is in...it is only fourth gear that does it. I am not an idiot when it comes to cars but i am kinda an idiot when it comes to my rx8 because I just got it...any insight would help out tremendously!!!
Time for a new tranny. Did you test drive the car before you bought it? Try changing the transmission fluid, maybe it is very old or low. But at 124,000 I bet your synchros are done.
If you have to ask...it isn't something you can DIY....
It could just be the syncro...or.......If you can find a good used tranny for $500ish it will likely be the most cost effective solution...

I contacted them and they don't have any transmissions anymore:/ sigh. I will change fluid soon. I work all day and go to school at night. I'll get to it when I can...
ok so now 5th gear is starting in like the 4th gear but sometimes b4 it is warmed up and especially now that it is getting colder i can get into 4th at high revs without grinding atleast once...still havent managed to change the fluid...been too busy but I have it! lol...feedback?
I tried a random good-brand GL-4. It did not work. I tried, based on CW around here, Red Line Mt-90. It worked. I "searched" to find others have had good results with RL which is why I tried it. Try whatever you want.
Ok thank you very much! I guess I will be taking back the Royal Purple then and get Redline. Is there anywhere such as an auto parts store that would carry it, or would I have to find it online? I want to change the fluid ASAP and I have found it online, I just dont want to have to wait for it to come in...
