PA Trans just quit

I bought my 05 RX8 as a second owner.

Transmisson seemed 'rough shift' from 1-2 but not horrible. I figured the previous owner dropped the clutch and slammed into second a couple times, whatever...
Hitting over 6k in 3rd and going into 4th, would always grind and never go into gear until I lowered my rpms...
When starting my car cold, or warm I would press the clutch to start and the trans would be silent, but once I released the clutch in neutral, a noticable 'whirring' noise would sound.
Last night I drove home like normal. Once I started her up this morning I couldnt shift into 1st at all, still or rolling. All gears grinded once I got moving, and reverse isnt engaging either, just grinding....
Is this my throwout bearing? Clutch linkage?
I have a mazda dealership in town. Should I use them to dianose? Then use the 'mom and pop' transmisson shop to do the work. I wanna replace clutch, throw out, and fly wheel anyways, but if its the transmisson itself what to do...
Any insight will be apprecated...
Brett

I bought a bumper to bumper warranty from the dealer I bought the RX from. I called them earlier about this and they said if its the trans, have the dealership call them and they will handle all the $ issues... Should I take it to Mazda? If it is the trans will I get a new trans or a refurb? Is Mazda shady, or are they expensive because their legit?

Before you do anything costly, check your trans fluid!!! If its burnt//well used, changed it with Redline.. It made a world of difference!!! My fluid was black and stunk up like high hell.. Hadn't been changed in over 68k miles! Doing the diff fluid tomorrow.. Also I recomend a Trans flush ^-^

I recently purchased an 07 RX8 and I'm in love. I notice the same 'whirring' noise when I release the clutch after start. I have 30 days from purchase (20 days left) to bring it back with any issues. Do you guys think it's worth while to have them look at it? Thanks!

That noise after releasing the clutch is normal. Do you have issues shifting in redline? or grinding while in gear?

First and second gear seem rough when I push the clutch in, shift to second before I even let the clutch out. This isn't all the time tho. I also think I hear it grinding in 2nd but not terrible. One other thing to add, while in gear around 6,000 rpms I hear a strange noise out of the engine. At this point I am going to take it back to the dealership for peace of mind. It will def. help if I'm informed so they don't try to B.S. me. I'll try shifting at redline, I haven't tried yet.

Check the bracket where the clutch pedal mounts to the firewall. They break. It's subject to a recall and hence free replacement. A clutch not fully disengaging can cause shifting problems.

Alright I will check that today. I made an appointment to bring it back to the dealer to get looked at.
There was one other thing I forgot to mention and I really appreciate all the feedback you guys have given me. I put the car on a lift and noticed the transmission had what looked like tan caulk coming out of it. Is this something that's normal or does this mean someone probably opened it up and did some work. The more info I have the better my chances with getting the dealer to fix it. Thanks again,

I would dump it... unless you wanna replace the trans. My master and slave cylinder were shot, so i replaced them, and my clutch and all bearings. Clutchwise shifting is great but trans is still rough...
