too much oil on dipstick????

this has been an on going thing...ive done 3 oil changes so far and the oil level is right about at the F mark once im done and drive around....about 1k miles after each change i check the oil and it seems as if it is passed the F mark, as if more oil has been put in...this scares me cause i read how some people put a qt or so every 1k-1.5k and so far ive never had to add oil between changes....

i dont know if its just that my oil dipstick and tube is not working properly, or maybe i just have an 8 that doesnt use an excessive amount of oil cause this def worries me, for all i know the stick might read F and im at E in reality ....just this morning i checked at the gas station and the entire stick had oil on it lol...thats when i thre up the penalty flag....anyone have any insight why this is happening...

last change i did 5 qts of mobil 1 synthetic...i need to start measuring how much is coming out now too...maybe im putting in more than is comnig out????

first question: year and mileage. If you don't have the most up to date flash your car may be using less than some of the others here. The recent (last 3-5months) PCM flash increased the oil consumption to aid in lubrication.

Also as you mentioned you may be overfilling the motor when you change your oil. Due to some oil being left in the oil coolers you're not going to get everything out. I always put in 4 quarts and then check the oil level to see how much I need to put in to top it off.

You should burn a quart of oil about every 1K-2K miles depending on your driving habits. The oil consumption increases dramatically at high RPM. I burn a quart on a track day!

Other than that you may want to have the dealer check that your OMP (oil metering pump) is working properly if you still don't see any oil consumption.

How about consider yourself lucky....I recently "blew up my engine" because I didn't add the oil mazda recommends you to do every other fill up...that's what the stealer said anyways...but...(whatever).......and my baby is a 2007 I got her when she had 200miles on her...she drinks oil like we drink water on a hot day....I wonder if I could get something done to her to fix this problems though...after all I am buying ANOTHER engine for my 8....."JUST MAYBE I CAN FIX THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT HAPPENS TO ME AGAIN"..........

The Mazda Rotary engine is Oil injected, the oil will go down. Thats why the dip stick has 1.8 quarts between the two marks. Most piston cars engines have 1.0 quarts between the marks. You should be Worried if it is not burning oil. Thats why "Magikone69" is worried and should be. ITS A ROTARY AND IT SHOULD BURN OIL!!! READ YOUR MANUAL and ask questions if you don't understand.

my 8 is a used 04 with 72k miles... this is the only concern i have with the 8 besides my 5th gear grinding but thats another story.

im going to be changing my oil again and at this point i will add 4 quarts then start up , then check the stick to see where it is.

as far as the flash, im looking at the print out of the cars work history and what i see is 4206F...ill be looking this up.

what im worried is trying to fix something that isnt really creating any problems..id hate to do somethin or get a new flash and that opens tons of problems...

^^That is the flash with the recall to see if your motor needed to be replaced. do you know if you have the original motor or a reman?

There is a more recent flash since then that is worth getting done. Your dealer should do it at no cost.

Your case sounds like you *already* overfilled your oil @ your oil change.

if you just drain from the plug normally, 4 quarts of oil is ALREADY MORE THAN ENOUGH.

if you jack your driver side up and(or) passenger side up while draining, you can probably go with 5 quart.

Usually, I just drain from plug first, Im a lazy *** so I didnt bother to jack the car up on one side then the other, so I just pour a bottle of *cheaper* full synthetic oil(Shell), in to flush some of the **** out in the pan, and let it completely drain. After its done I just close the plug, put 4 quarts of RP in then I'll just call it a day.

Oh also dont forget, oil expands when heated, so if you've been driven it for a while, the oil will go higher than it is.

if you have 4206F done that means you already have the *semi* newer flash, its not the latest, but its already kinda up to date.

but where did you *see* the 4206F tho ?

thank you sooooooo much, u gave me the answer i been searching all night for....i think im now going to just go with 4 quarts and just monitor it on a regular basis to see how it stays after 1k...2k...hopefully i will start to see minor decrease that way im sure the oil metering system is fully functional...my worse thought was that not enough oil was making its way to the engine.

as far as the flash i really dont know what i have besides that info i posted earlier..i know that was a recal that was done according to some searching i did. i will be heading to the dealership to see if they can flash with the latest update, and it is free right??????

any idea what the benefits of the new flash is?

im 99% sure its the original motor, but u never kno lol.

im def going to look into that newer flash, i have a coupon for free vehicle inspection so im going to see if they can pull any ecu codes and check for any problems i havent found personally....i kinda have the feeling im short on tranny fluid, gear shifts feel to be less smooth...

i got the info if the recall on a report i got from the dealership...the previous owner took very good care of the car...15k,30k,45k, and 60k all done at the dealership w/ all recalls....im very fortunant.

Make sure you clean the dip stick off. Then check after the oil has settled for awhile.

If you just stop the car and pull out the dip stick it will always look full or over filled.

New Flash contains new software code for your car's Engine Control Unit. It handles most of the function.

Im not 100% sure what flash level is now, but Im sure there was a new one released after the recall flash,

The recall flash correct a problem with the OMP flow. Mazda *forgot* to readjust for greater OMP flow for the *5w20* market (which is us), and after a while the engine gonna get **** up due to lack of lube from OMP.

the flash after the recall flash correct some minor idle problem.

Im still on recall flash, I have no problem with it so far.

that sounds great, if i can have something to help the idle id be happy, every since the prolite flywheel went in, its been a lil jumpy...when i did coils and plugs it helped alot but not as smooth as stock was....i def want it to smooth out...if only they could raise it to about 900...right now im at 700 or so and its not so smooth....900-1100 would be great and i wouldnt mind the extra fuel burning lol ;-)

thanks for the help guys...mlk is my next day off so ill go to the dealer then and get a full inspection.

I have Fidanza FW and its one of the lightest FW for Rx-8, I dont have much idle issues. I notice that it happens only if Im on some sort of incline, if Im on a perfectly flat(or just flat) road the idle stays perfectly.

Even stock fw idles badly sometimes.

hmm 700 is too low for idle. and @ 900-1100 rpm you're going to waste a lot of fuel. if it goes below 700 after hard driving you should have the engine inspected.

when u're @ dealership, tell them to update your car's PCM/ECU.

MSP16 is the latest flash program released. "Lack of power" or not; go do it as it increases OMP output rate.

http://www.finishlineperformance.com...13-08-1925.pdf

EDIT: "A revised PCM calibration is available which increases metering oil lubrication amount during engine start and changes ignition timing control during high ambient air temperature conditions."
