Ok, So I have been working on getting my car to run correctly....2004 RX-8, Base Model

Car will not rev past 2K RPM. I changed the throttle body out with a new one.

I had several engine codes, and i replaced the coils, spark plugs, spark wires, and it took care of most the codes....there is now only one left....P2109.

I realized that when I just put the car key to the "On" position, there is a weird noise, and the throttle body would get really hot.

My assumption is that the throttle body wires are being grounded somewhere, or there is a bare wire that is making contact to the car, or another wire, and causing all the heat on the throttle body....

Any Ideas/Suggestions that I could try?

 

Sounds like the throttle Position sensor in the throttle body has failed. Do you have an aftermarket intake?
Have you verified the TB operation? As in pull the intake tube off and watch the throttle butterfly operate while some one is slowly pushing down on the gas pedal with the ignition on. You should be able to hear it functioning too.. That's where I would start.

 

why did you change the throttle body? changed it with a new one, do you mean a new oem one?

 

I don't agree that the heat is from an electrical problem - the fuse would blow before any heat was seen.
You do realize the TB has coolant running thru it? So it will 'normally' be too hot to touch.

yeah but its getting hot from the key just being in the on position. how long in the on position does it take to go from room temp to hot??

 

I changed the old TB because it was a starting point, I got one off of here from Race Roots for a good price, so i tried it first.

It is probably a minute or two and it would get hot....

The butterfly drive motor could build up heat. If is was reaching peak current and had a lot of resistance in the drive operation. And not blow the fuse.

 

well 210 degF coolant gets things a bit toasty too

however, if you swapped it out with a different one and the same thing happened then in all likely hood it is just normal

unless the service procedure tells you otherwise blindly swapping parts is only a starting point for people wanting to waste time & money,

 

but it gets hot from just turning the key to "on". cold throttle body, turn the key on., 2 minutes later hot throttle body. its got to be a short of some kind
