Synthetic Oil question... different one, though.

I read elsewhere on this board (can't find the specific thread at the moment) that while synthetic oils are not recommended for the RX-8, there are some that have been approved for use by Mazda.

Does anyone have a list of these approved synthetics, or any examples (aside from Mazda's own brand)?

Just use regular oil. I know I'll get flamed by the expert synthetic fanboi's but why spend the extra money on synthetic when its not needed. If my car Dyno's the same as cars using synthetic and I have 85k using dino oil.........I just don't get the obsession with synthetic is a car that burns oil by design. Castrol GTX 10W30 FTW. But it's your money so just use RP. Your in Texas so use 10W30.

P.S. Check out the Gulf Forum for San Antonio meets

Was asking because I'm already putting synthetic in there, but if there's something else that's already approved, at least I figure I could minimize whatever damage I could theoretically be doing by using something Mazda-tested and approved.

You are doing no damage running synthetic.

You are not doing any damage by running synthetic but search. It may be BS but Mazda says synthetic is not recommended for the Renesis and while I have never heard of them denying warranty work on a blown engine because of it, why give them the wiggle room. When I had my engine replaced they asked me if I ran synthetic.

I don't know what the response would have been if I said yes but still. Let me just say that my first engine died at 22k running synthetic and my second has 60+ running Castrol GTX. I know the first engine may have been due to the metering pump issue but just thought I'd mention it because I still wasted all that money on synthetic for nothing.

I wouldn’t run synthetic without an OMP adapter and 2stroke reservoir.

You guys are injecting synthetic oil on the apex seals and synthetic oil does not burn like regular oil does.

In a perfect world Mazda would have designed the rx8 with a 2stroke oil reservoir so that the oil that the apex seals require get lubricated by oil that burns nice and clean.
