SSSSSHHHtt
Can you hear the noise better with the windows up or down? When your sitting in the drivers seat in your opinion is the noise infront or behind you? Did the noise start right after you had any work completed on the car?

Oh no definately up cuz when its down the Greddy takes over lol. I think the noise is right in the middle like right below the middle compartment. Well it's hard to tell if its after I added stuff to my 8 after all its all been cosmetics.

slllygrl...i doubt its anything from the motor. vacuum is stronger at idle than anything above 1000 rpm. so that noise you're describing can't be anything related to your intake, plus you have the stock box. if it were anything to do with the exhaust it wouldn't sound like shhhttt....more like a raspy/harsh sound. like an exhaust leak. since you have an automatic you shouldn't worry about anything. otherwise there would either be leaks, transmission wouldn't engage properly.
just for kicks, check underneath the car for me and see if you're dragging anything. if not, try using a long screw driver and bend back the dust shields behind your brake rotor. how many miles do you have? maybe your brake pads are wearing out.
if you can't figure it out by tomorrow...come to the rotary meet we're having up in columbia. i'm sure we can figure it out.

Thats what I was thinking, either a rock or twig stuck behind a brake rotor guard or a something in the drive shaft tunnel rubbing on the driveshaft. In a safe way, supports and all, raise the rear of the car and let the wheels turn, and have some one see if they can locate it. Also try raising and spinning each individual front wheel/tire. Cat and mouse is always fun. Also check all of your intake, for loose covers or clamps allowing an air short ciruit.

When is the meet?? I have 8k miles. I dont see anything dragging underneath. Why would it be the brake pads I hear the noise and I'm not braking.

If it sounds like someone inhaling (in a raspy way - like Darth Vader) every now and again, I think it's the AC condenser. Mine makes that noise all the time when I have the air on and sounds like it's coming from the passenger door area. Give that a look see.

Ok I drove 1 1/2 hours to get back home. What I noticed was when the rpm was between 2.75 to 3rpm's thats when it makes this sssshhhhh noise. If this was due to the intake then why 2.75 to 3rpm's?

Yes I do, what change? That auto should have this problem? As far as rpm 6speed has 9k over 7k auto advantage but intake I think they are all the same or did you mean ports?

Great answer......
I don't know what RPM the SSV opens in the automatic. I would guess its lower than the high power. So if that's what makes the hiss.......
Maybe Snapon or someone can confirm. I would also assume that the VDI valve opens at an earlier RPM on the auto as well.........

i have an auto too and i think i know the noise your talking about... it happens in my third and fourth gear under 3k rpms like you guys said its when i am cruising but when i hear it i just press alittle more on the gas and it goes away... sorta sounds like something metal is rubbing on some other metal surface sorta like a bearing spinning real fast with no lube on it, and i hear it from under the car with my window down.
