Sputtering low rpms....

I dont know how to explain this, but it started in the last month or so. Between 1 and 2 rpms (x1000) there is a sputtering or hesitation. Like it's spitting or gurgling gas and then the car goes. Gas mileage has gone down a bit as well. I thought maybe since i'm at 23k it may be a dirty air filter, but i took out the one i had in there and cleaned it with an air compressor just to see if that helped and it didn't.

Any ideas?

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I just got my 8 back from Mazda after a replacement of the engine and tranny, I'm getting sputtering and loss of gas mileage too. Almost sounds like a long drawn out constant burble and a loss of power from 3-5k rpms.

"A complete engine and tranny replacement"?? Yikes! What's up with that?

This is weird, because I just got back from a quick drive at lunch. I happened to run across a Model "A" Ford owner's convention at a local hotel near where I work. Was just barely moving through the parking lot in 1st gear, checking out the old cars and suddenly it felt like my car was intermittently losing power, or maybe "hiccupping" a bit. I just got it a month ago brand new. Wasn't a big deal, but I hope it's not something that's about to get worse.

Holy crap... I thought all this was normal... I remember feeling this problem when I test drove an 8.. and then again when I bought my 8 and it's been happening ever since. o_o; I guess I should show this TSB to my dealer?

Update on the sputtering...
I had a new engine put in after MNAO finally confirmed that the rear rotor had lost 36-40 PSI. Mazda installed the engine, I drove the car for about 1 week, I was hearing sputtering and exhaust sounds which were abnormal. Ends up, today it was confirmed that coolant was leaking into the new engine. I don't know how or why, I wasn't told. But, now Mazda has ordered another engine which will arrive on Monday or Tuesday of next week. So still haven't found out why an engine blew twice, hopefully the third one does blow also.

Sorry, what I meant was that this new engine that will be coming in on Mon. will be the third one including the original that came with the car. I'm just hoping that this new one (3rd so far in the car) doesn't blow.

I noticed an intermit. hick up or sputtering at idle sometimes.

Its weird it almost acts like the the engine is misfiring. Give it alittle gas & no problem with acceleration. Idle for awhile and the tach starts jumping. Happens once in a while.

Any feedback?

road, what you describe is normal. there's a fine line they have to play between burning excessive fuel at idle, and giving you a smooth idle.
