They throw the car on a lift, after an hour they diagnose it as a leaking rear main seal. Great. They're not sure if tech is going to want to do another motor or have them do the work on site.

This is the 6th service visit for this problem now, and again, I'm in a rental economy car. By my estimates I've missed 3 days of work due to this problem, as well as being out the use of my car for over 2 weeks.

This sucks.
Could you just claim it a "lemon" and get your money back?

Well boyz and girls - finally got the car back. New engine 30 days later.
Drove her around the block and promptly traded her in.

They replaced the engine, starter and various other parts. The tech told me that there were 3 more right behind mine getting the same thing. All auto trans.
I asked him what was going on with this car?

He said they added another port to the new engine and that it "should" eliminate the problems. The old engine was running too lean and it was not lubricating properly.

Thus: This is goodbye. I now drive a Nissan Xterra.

Thanks for all your help.

Bummer dude, Never did meet you either.
Now was this tech saying this your replacement motor had 6 port's or.......
If that was the statement Zoom44 is right. Bullshit.

the '06 has a 6 port motor.

For whatever reason I had an injector stop working. As soon as I went into boost it pinged and I lost a seal on the rear rotor. Being the renesis, it bounced around in there and took out the others too. Its a reman motor and it is smoother than the original.

I am now a proud member of the new engine club myself. From what the dealer says, this is the third engine to be in this vehicle. I have a 04 M/T 27,500 miles.
Symptoms: Rattling sound upon reving the motor, on the way back down the RPM's, rattling while driving in any gear at about 3K RPM's under little or no load.
Dealer said it was the oil pump, along with the shaft that connects it to a gear that also needed replaced. After they removed the oil pan, they said they noticed "debris" in the oil pan. It was officially new engine time.

Engine Replaced at 33,000

Hey guys,
The reason I was brought to this website is because of the problems stated below. Great Info and I would like to thank you guys in advance for all and any help you have provided.

04 Mazda RX-8 with 6 speed Manual Tranny, Midland Texas Last 2 weeks average Temp 100. Bought Used at 25,000 miles for the wife, Ran great till 30,000 miles then left us stranded at a red light on the center lane of a 8 lane road. <---that sucked. Mazda came and got it, week later got new battery, starter all that stuff. 2 weeks later starts stalling while coming to a stop. Take it back to mazda, they sent the CPU to Cali. to get reflashed, got it back a week later and ran great for a whole week and bam, Same thing. Back to Mazda, they sent the CPU back to Cali. for a "New" reflash. Week later, Got it back and bam, Same thing. Back to Mazda again, 3 weeks ago from today they call and say were ordering you a new engine we'll call you when it's ready. So should be ready Tomm (6/16/2006) We'll see. But from what I've read here. The new engines aren't fixing the problems is this true? And will this be an 06 engine or what and what changes have they made to the engine?

Thanks
Chris Mulkey

I don't get it, I took my car to the beach last summer where the car was telling me it was 95+ degrees out, sitting in cruising traffic with A/C on max and blowing as hard as it could and the car did not have one single hicup. Did this for about 3 days straight. Yet, you guys in TX, NV, and whereever else are having the cars die on you. Must be the extended heat yours have to endure.

yours wasnt the same issue then as the people in the heat in ATs. the result may have been the same- but the cause were different. for instance your oil didnt reach temps that caused it to cook off while sitting it traffic i bet.

Got the car back today and the new engine. (June 17, 2006)

Ok here's the skinny,

Well the car was ready yesterday, but we were unable to pick the car up because we live 50 Miles from the dealership. We got the car today, took them 3 weeks to replace engine, 2 weeks waiting on engine, 1 week install. I've got questions though and I thought ya'll might like to know as well. I asked Ben (Head Service Manager) if the engine now gets a new warranty or am I limited to the 50,000 mile one? No new warranty, we get only what's left on the existing, unless you have an extended warranty and that will cover just the same. 2nd Question, Did I get a new 06 engine or a rebuilt engine? I got a rebuilt engine, same outer casing as all the rest, just brand new insides. My blown engine is headed back to become one of ya'lls new ones. No new ports, no redesigns, nothing. Ok, 3rd Question, Will this fix my problem? No, they are still having problems all through the years, 04, 05, 06, still getting new engines. 4th Question, What was wrong with my engine? Lost compression, Tech said "new engine” 5th Question, How many engines has this dealership (Midland Texas) replaced? 14 Total 12-A/T, 2-6-speeds (mine was the 2nd) 6th Question, How many cars has this dealership bought back? 4, one was sitting outside with a sticker that said, "This vehicle is not to be driven by anyone at anytime, this vehicle belongs to Mazda North American" blah blah blah, that car was heading back. He did say they are mostly the A/T, and are mostly happening in the south States (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada all = HEAT) There you guys go, that's what I got. I think were going to start looking for another car, but until then, its running great, has more power and seems to be running good. We'll see how long it lasts until we can find another car. Any questions please feel free to ask.

Later
Chris

not one 06 AT has had its engine replaced due to this issue- if he said that he is misinformed/lieing.

did they tell you why the engine lost compression?

Also, check to see if you have a newly designed engine by the new PCV system that the older engines don't have. I have not seen one, so Zoom will probably have to tell you what to look for.

The Tech couldn't tell me why I lost compression and is there a picture or something of the new PCV system so as to compare.

Initiation into the new engine club

Well gentlemen, I am about to join those of you who have had engine replacements.

I didn't have my 8 last summer, so I've been worried as the heat has gone up to 110+ here in Vegas.

Today, it happened. Died on the freeway, and wouldn't restart for about 10 mins. When I got it restarted it was in some kind of limp mode. Wouldn't go over 10 MPH, so I went up the nearest ramp and called Mazda Roadside.

The tow truch driver who came to get me said he picks up a lot of 8's. He said, and I quote -- "I get a lot of these, even from people who are driving home from the dealership after just buying it." Ouch.

So, when I got into the dealer, the first thing he said was, "We may have this for awhile. Most likely you will need a new engine, and we have those already waiting for engines." As he pointed at 4 RX-8s sitting next to the service garage. They were about 5 or 6 other 8's nearby, but I think they were in for other service.

At any rate, if I do get the new engine, I just hope it also helps my gas mileage a bit. I have been running aroung 13MPG since I got the car 8 months ago. Maybe there have been compression issues all along.

I'm at 43k+ miles... but the problem has been happening since 35k+ miles. Shakes, and at a stop sign/light it would just shut off. Already have had the engine shut off on my on the freeway. I've taken the car to 3 dealerships already, and nothing could be done. Mazda will not help with this, and I'm not sure if Lemon law would help in this matter. I've sent hand written letters to Mazda USA to see if anything can be done, but they simply say "thank you for contacting us, take it to the dealership." It's a revolving circle of frustration.

Sadly that's why I've decided to give up on the car... the car that I've loved since the very beginning, yet Mazda USA can't help me on this matter... their flagship car.

9/2003 build date, AT, GT Package.

Got my RX8 back yesterday....6-1/2 weeks after taking it in....I had to call Mazda North America Operations to get the dealer to finish my car. Received my warranty engine replacement....I paid for a new clutch while the engine was out....warranty bill came to $6300.....clutch cost me $230 (dealer made a mistake - should have been more - they admit it).

I was promised a new engine, received a reman.
Back of invoice/paperwork shows 12-month/12,000 mile warranty on ALL mazda parts - so I am assuming this applies to the engine.

6-1/2 weeks! in a Chevy Cobalt loaner.

My "new" RX8 feels so good....I had almost forgotten how much I love it. Clutch feels nice. Engine very smooth - no rough idle anymore...

Now to just baby it for the rest of its life and hope this never happens again.

150 miles into the "new" engine tonight, I get a CEL......back to the dealer tomorrow.....hoping its just another EVAP leak having to do with the gas cap...I was getting CELs for this before the swap...

As for the 12K mile warranty, I am hoping they honor it, as I am 5K miles from being out of the original factory warranty.
