Maybe it's different in Canada? I think mine took about three working days to get, though unfortunately that fell over a holiday weekend so took almost an actual week.

Still not installed though, waiting for clutch now Over a week now without my 8, gonna be 2+ weeks... I'm going out of my mind, lol....

I'm third in line at Weber Mazda in Edmonton. The service said the other guys have been waiting quite a while and it could be almost two months for mine.

2 months? OMG that is unacceptable.

I'm barely accepting 2 weeks here, I already have calls placed with connections I have at Mazda Canada, hoping they can help out...

I remember Sleepy-Z mentioning a couple of years ago that they where shipping out 350 to 450 RX8 engines a month, I wonder if it increased...

Wow, I brang in my car on may 31st. My engine arrived sometime this week. I'm dropping off my car Monday. (The Tech was already putting an engine in another RX8 and probably didn't want his week to be ruined by constantly doing motors)

Wow... ouch!

Maybe some of us are getting remanufactured ones quickly, while others are waiting for new ones from Japan?

I don't know... wonder what the difference is?

I'm beginning to wonder if the engines in Canada are coming from Virginia or not...

Add me to the list of possible new engine, failed my compression test yesterday. They didnt provide the readings over the phone, but since I failed I really dont much care what they are. I should know Monday whether Mazda will approve a new engine or not, but shouldnt have any problems as my only mods are springs and a Greddy SP2 exhaust.

I was pretty disappointed they didnt offer a loaner car for this situation. I fought them pretty hard for it and they still wouldnt budge. This is essentially my only car and its a pain in the *** having it be in the shop for 1-2 weeks. I now have to inconvenience some family members to get rides to and from work, which they were more than happy to do, but its the principle of the matter. Mazda knows these replacements take time and should take care of there customers in the meantime.

Ill keep people updated on how long it takes. BTW Im an 05 with 65K miles, and premixed for the last 5K. Only had the car for 12K, not sure if the original owner premixed or not.

I too may be joining this club. ATM it appears to only be a coil failure (Definite), and pretty rough plugs, but other members have suggested that the audio in the video I posted sounds like compression loss. I'm hoping for the best, because Mazda already told me they won't approve a new engine.

Guess why?

Because I live in Canada, and my car was imported from the US. What bullshit. The Mazda tech told me that even if I got a hold of all the maintenance records and what not, that it would be hard to approve a new engine because everything would have to be shipped to the states for inspection and approval

You might try contacting Mazda direct (using that phone # in the owner's manual) to find out hat to do... if it's just a matter of getting the car back to a US Mazda dealer, that can be arranged if it means getting a new engine installed for free.. right?

Agreed, I'd drive several hours and spend some money on gas, food, possibly a hotel to save me the cost of a new engine!

4th engine

my 04 RX-8 6spd is on its 4th engine according to paperwork. Odometer mileage is just under 69k! the 3rd engine was installed just before i got the car and has last about 44k miles. Just had the 4th put in last week under warranty, what a battle that was. only 100 miles after the new engine i got a flashing cel with no code popping up though. eventually it gave me a P0300 (random misfire). also noticed the AFR is lean after start up and AFR fluctuates at most engine speeds. I also briefly had a P0171 (system lean bank 1). I was thinking vacuum leak as i did find one vacuum cap missing on the intake manifold just below the throttle body and quickly replaced it. not sure if there is supposed to be a hose there or something.... But anyhow the problem seems to be getting worse as sometimes it has a throaty sounds and sputters at around 4500rpm. maybe it could be that secondary air shutter system. Im probably gonna have to take it back to the dealer and tell em they messed up, but everything takes so long with them, so i was hoping to find a better solution. Just thought I'd check out any ideas here?

Missing a cap on one of the vacuum service ports in the intake manifold will get you a code. I would reset the ECU (search brake stomp method) and go from there.

Well, I just joined the new engine club. Compression test on my 04 Rx8 with almost 87k miles was just under spec. I've had her since August of 2003 so my warranty was about to run out.

I plan on getting my intake decarbon'd while she's apart. I might get a new clutch put on too if it can save me some labor cost. Anyone else have suggestions of other things to get done?

Get your oil injectors tested and get your fuel injectors cleaned and flow tested.

So I guess the ETA they gave me for my engine delivery was a CYA ETA.

Last monday they said it would land in toronto on June 17th.

In fact they received it yesterday and started working on it this morning.

At least its good news, I'll have the car a good week and a half / two weeks ahead of what I was expecting.

The saga continues.....

So I got a whopping 3K klms. On my 2nd engine and the compression check is showing the front rotor to be at half compression!....LOL. I need to laugh now or the alternative isn't good.
But seriously, this 2nd engine didn't feel good right from the start.
The dealership has been awesome to deal with and that makes things so much easier, I had at least 3 apologies from 3 different service guys this morning alone after the compression readings came back.
"Hey" I told them, "Its not your fault, you're all doing your best, you didn't ship me a dud of a replacement engine".
Time to go and beat the hell out of my free Hyundai Elantra rental!

Did the dealership charge you just to analyze the car? Mazda towed mine 45 miles for free but the dealership I had it towed to called me and they wan't $320 just to diagnose it and they said if the engine is replaced I will have to pay for labor. WTF Anyone out there that can tell me their costs on warranty replacements?

If your engine core is on warranty, this is what should be covered.

Towing
Diagnostics
Reman Engine (includes waterpump, thermostat and gaskets)
All labor for replacing the engine

Things not under warranty:

All parts that need to be replace that are bad and necessary to make your car run (i.e.):

coils
plugs
hoses
SSV
cables
clutch
oil
filter
other fluids
etc..

On the extra's you can debate with them especially if you know you've replaced some of those parts yourself recently.

Some dealerships dont charge for most of the extra's, especially oil and fluids, etc..

Seems you have a sly one that wants to be paid by Mazda for the engine replacement and by you. They are trying to shaft you, that is for sure.

Its normal though that they charge for the diagnostic or compression test, but if it does turn out its the engine, that fee should be waved. Compression test should be about 2h work. 320$ is way too much.

oh and if you are still on bumper to bumper warranty... everything should be covered.

This has always shocked me. Early on Cat was contracted to provide the remans but then was dumped supposedly because of poor quality. Then the Mazda plant was built in VA and people were trained (sleep-Z member here) and supposedly the quality of the reamans was better. Yet there are people here who have experienced early failures of the VA remans and some even had motors from japan fail since there was a period where remans were scarce and people got motors from japan (cornholio135 and Al I remember off the top of my head).

I know plenty who had remans installed only to have them fail a few days, or even weeks later. Many claimed install error and I can understand that because I helped Hoss-05 fix a serious oil leak after he received his reman and the the oil pressure sending unit was not tightened al all allowing oil to spray everywhere. In addition to that his AC compressor bolts were only hand tight and backed out and were interfering with his steering.

So if you get a reman, give your car a good once over before you resume driving as usual. I have been through two replacements and found broken, unplugged stuff both times.

My last engine came from the time when the VA plant was gearing up. It's the best one yet.

Jeez Al, how many have you had, and brief mileage history would be good also.

So a week later from the time I was told, I was approved by Mazda today. Apparently failing one compression was not enough for my particular car. They had to do the Zoom Zoom engine cleaner and then retest... and wait for Mazda's reply. So Im in this 10 days deep and was just approved today for a new engine. I dont understand what took so long? Test once, zoom zoom, retest, should be a day or two max. Now add in 3-5 days to get new said engine, plus 2-3 days for install and Im in almost 3 weeks here. I know you guys in Canada are hurting worse but t his is simply unacceptable.

They need to start offering free car rentals to anyone getting an engine replacement. This is my only car and I am inconveniencing all my friends and family and hitching rides. I understand Mazda is doing the right thing by replacement my engine for free, but why should I be carless because there engines cant last? I love my 8, but I am super disappointed with Mazda and this entire process.

/\ Hang on you have a 6 + year old car and you are getting a new engine for free....and there is something wrong...Give me a break mate..

What would you prefer Mazda to give you a totally new RX-8 for nothing?

I consider you guys in the US very lucky to have an 8 year warranty, every other country does not..You also purchase new Mazda's cheaper than any other nation.

But do I hate Mazda because I don't get an 8 year warranty..no.

But what I dislike are those who think they get a raw deal..

There are not too many car manufacturers who would give you a new engine and a loan car when a car is over 6-8 years old...in fact I cant think of any other make who would do this.

Perhaps Mitsubishi..

Yes, there is inconvenience for you...and I guess you are dealing with it.

I would be more than happy if I had the same protection.

Good luck..

You guys are too funny. My Mazda dealership always puts me in a loaner car @ no charge. I've been driving around in a Mazda 3 for almost a week :-)
