Are engines being replaced out of warranty; I am at 63,700, went in for the "urgent recall, reflash" today, Saturday, and the car would not idle after they were done. They did a compression test and said i needed a new engine and would call mazda on Monday. Are people replacing the clutch with the engine. thanks.

 

My car is in the shop now and they are telling me I need an engine replacement but due to my custom modifications another dealership I had taken it to flagged my 2005 RX8 as out of warranty completely with Mazda. All modifications were original dealer installed before I bought the car.

Funny thing is my car has 30k miles on it and it is exactly the way I purchased it from the dealer with no modifications of my own. All maintenance has been on time and always done at a dealership. So I follow all the rules and still they are trying to bone me and seems like they are winning.

All it has is a cold air intake (Mazda Speed), a pulley kit and the catalytic converter/exhaust upgrade.

I paid like an extra 1.5k for the parts at time of purchase and looked the dealer right in the eye with my mom sitting right next to me and asked if I need to worry about warranty voiding from the performance parts they put on and I got a "No not at all!".

So after my RX8 being in mulitple shops for going on 3 weeks now. I'm looking down the barrel of having to pay for a complete new engine after only 30k miles.

So I guess I'm going to be a member of the new engine club, let's just hope it's not the I had to buy my own engine club.

So put the OEM parts back and take the car again to the dealer !

 

It's not that easy. I would have to buy probably a whole new exhaust/cat and airbox and pulleys, sure the pulleys and airbow wouldn't be bad but the other two would probably cost me what 2k? Though that is probably cheaper then a replacement engine.

Besides I shouldn't have to pay for ANYTHING since I never did anything wrong. I was just lied to and basically cheated. If I'm going to spend that kind of money I may as well use it as a retainer for a lawyer. Since neither the dealer or Mazda seems to care about my situation.

 

Look up the Magnussen Moss act on this forum. They cannot deny your warranty claim unless they can prove that your mods lead to the problem with the engine. Which they didn't. You need to fight them and call Mazda North America. If you aren't going to the dealer you bought it from you should go to them since they told you flat out it wouldn't be a problem.

That is a good positive way to look at it.

I was not willing to roll the dice again though. I traded it in for a MX-5 miata before the car got out of the shop.

 

New member here. My car has been at the dealership for over 3 weeks now. After complaining about the lack of power and rough idle symptoms for over a year, the dealership finally followed the latest TSB and it was determined that I needed a new engine at ~48k miles ('04 MT).

I was told that the first remanufactured engine came with a blown rear main seal and was leaking oil all over the place. They replaced the rear main seal and gave the car back to me on Saturday. On my way home I experienced severe lack of power symptoms and the check engine light came on. Smoke then started billowing out from under the hood. I pulled over and found that oil was leaking from the engine at a fairly rapid pace. The dealership told me to drive it back to them despite the rapid oil loss. It turns out that the leak was at the rear main seal again. However, this time it was determined that there was a problem with the engine causing the improper fit of the rear seal. So now the dealership is waiting on another remanufactured engine. So I'm already up to engine #3 and I'm only a few weeks into this ordeal. The situation certainly doesn't inspire confidence! The first replacement engine didn't even get me home, so why I should I believe that the second engine will last me a while?

First off, I have a 2004 MT with 47,000 miles on it.

My car was running fine except for the occasional hard start and slightly rough idle. I figured the rare hard starts were because I never had the battery/starter TSB done. Additionally, I figured the slight rough idle was due some worn motor mounts. It really only idled rough when I had the A/C on.

Anyways, I took it in yesterday morning and asked them to have a look at my motor mounts because it was idling rough. I informed them that I had already changed my plugs, coils, and air filter. Since I didn't receive a call by after lunch, I gave them a call and asked if they had inspected the mounts. He then told me that it appears I would need a new motor! Obviously, I was shocked and asked what he had found. He read me the numbers from a compression test, which were REALLY low, around 3.8, 4.1, etc. He said that before Mazda would replace the engine, they were requiring him to decarb the engine just to make sure. He called back this morning and the decarb obviously didn't help.

First off, I'm a little shocked because I took it in for a compression test about four weeks ago, in which the numbers were around 7's and 8's. Perhaps the recent hot weather did it in? Second of all, just last Friday, on an uncrowded country road, I red-lined the car through several of the gears just to make sure it was running well, which it was.

Oh well, I just hope the new engine runs well and is installed correctly. Additionally, I asked them to have a look at the motor mounts when they had the engine out - He said they would.

Count me, car just passed the 30k mark 2 days ago, and now i'm at the dealership for lack of power. Just said I'll probably need a new engine...and my warranty expires tomorrow. 5/29/08

Worst part is I've only had the car for 4k miles.

 

At least it is under warranty.... one more day and you could have been SOL.

what year/model is your car?

Also, have them verify the engine in the car is the original engine. Since you just got the car 4k ago it could be the previous owner dumped it when a new engine was needed and you have a reman. engine in there all ready.

 

The car is an 04, 03 build date.
I checked out the printout of the warranty work history, only 6 or 7 items none of them being a new engine.

I doubt the previous owner knew what a rotary was. Car was running PERFECTLY up until a few days ago. Turns out its misfiring now really bad on one of the cyls, its getting compression tested tomorrow and if needed, will be getting a new engine...which it probably will.

 

Well your under warranty and you bought used so you shouldn't be out any on the engine, and if you decide to sell it off you hopefully won't loose much so it could be a lot worse... likely doesn't feel like that to you now though.. I know.

Most everything works great just before it breaks. That's why it aint broke.

 

It it's misfiring it's probably your coils. those are cheap and easy to replace.

Now I'm wondering what's the latest build date to have a new engine? I haven't heard of any '07's yet...or '06's, come to think of it. Anybody?

 

i took it to avondale Mazda which is pretty cool i guess. says there replacing it with a new engine since i took in with after market clutch and flywheel and stuff they are charging me $120 to take my flywheel off and out it on the other engine. The reason for that because he told me the new engine already has a flywheel on it. Plus i don't need 2 oem flywheels sitting around at my house when i have 1 already

 

I went and got it today, they changed the spark plugs and say the engine stopped misfiring on rotor 2.

Took it out for 10 minutes and took it RIGHT back, still having lack of power and still having a hard time starting.

AND they seriously curbed my rim in the middle and on the lip, threw some black paint over it (just painted them black 2 weeks ago) and didn't say a thing.

I have to bring it back monday so they can see about the rim and taking the master tech there for a test drive to show HIM what is wrong with it.

 

That sucks, rims are a pain to keep perfect then someone else mucks them up... The fact they didn't say anything would **** me off more then anything.

Did they do a compression test on the motor?

 

Yes, they did a compression test and said it was okay, yet I'm sort of doubting if they really did it. All they did was install new spark plugs and send me on the way, car is still having a hard time starting and is lacking power in low end.

Also, an update about my problem, turns out I won't need a new engine, took two tries but after the second time I told the mechanic to HAND CHECK the ignition coils since his computer said nothing was wrong, he replaced them and now the car is back working 100%.

I swear, people just need to listen to the customer sometimes when they know a thing or two about their car.
