No surprise, quite a few OE clutches have come apart, though not with these exact results

and sorry, been a while without bowing another trans (crosses fingers) and I forgot about the hidden bolt under the starter flange

Glad you got it sorted. I would not reuse that starter, not worth the risk. Too bad you are not here helping me put my engine and turbo back it because it was ion the 70's and sunny today

I've experienced maybe 4 clutch failures due to simple friction surface being used up, and it was just...no friction. None of them came apart like this. But then, those were all piston engines with more like 2.5k average RPM. The whole "pieces embedded in the starter" thing I chalk up to just bad luck on my part. Those pieces could have ended up elsewhere, and didn't.

It may not have been the smartest thing showing my wife what high RPM disintegration can do

I AM glad that I didn't continue driving longer than I did, even if I theoretically could have with rev-match shifting. I'm sure more driving would have just continued the internal destruction, considering those pieces were keeping the flywheel from turning (once the engine was off). To me, that says that things were still flying around in there at the time I pulled it to a stop.

I'm going to call Paul at Mazmart tomorrow morning and discuss the starter with him, and probably end up ordering another one.

Glad you got it sorted out and the damage does not seem to be anything that cannot be fixed. Regarding using the current starter motor it depends on your needs, if you have to use the car for work then I would risk it for a week till you can replace it but if you can live without the car then I would just wait.
