scanalyer question

I have used the search button, but have had no luck. I just got the scan tool for my new 8 and then went out to get a serial to usb cable so I could even used the tool. But the damn thing keeps telling me no port found. so I can't even take the tool to the next level. I have used a scan tools before on my vw and had no problems. What am I doing wrong? And yes I read the manual. Any info would be helpful thanks

it should... I went into the options and try changing things and no difference. No vista for me, just in case that matters

If it's like the other usb to serial cables out there then you had to install a driver to get the usb cable installed on the computer. If you go to the Device Manager you will see it listed as a COM port.

Sometimes these USB to serial cables install with a COM port number that you can't use because it is not listed as one of the available ones in the scan software. Try this to change it to one that will work:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
3. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
4. Double-click the appropriate COM port.
5. On the Port Settings tab, click Advanced.
6. In the COM Port Number box, click the appropriate number (1 - 4, something that one of the other COM ports isn't using if you have more than one).
7. Click OK.

Hope this helps

Not all USB to serial cables work with all software and/or devices.

A few years back I got involved with the radio scanner community, writing software for scanners that used serial ports. USB adapters were kind of a crap shoot. There was a bit of "You get what you pay for" (e.g., don't buy the cheap-*** special at CompUSA), but it got pretty random. The problem is that these cables emulate a serial port through software, and count on the app working strictly through the Windows API.

There are PCMCIA serial adapters that are real serial hardware, and will work with anything. More expensive, though.
