DarkMyth: You got a compression problem if the proper maintained engine dies at idle when hot...
Check the things mentioned in this thread above ... begin with the cheapest/easiest things and then work up from there ...
MAF, ESS, Filter, Intake screens, Catalytic Converter, Plugs, wires, coils, O2 Sensors ecetera
And get the compression test and a look into your catalytic converter soon!
Greetings
Thomas
edit: ohh i see u dont have a cat ... did u reuse the intake screens in the AEM Intake?

Hey guys. Here's a little background info on my 8.
It's 2005 70,600miles. Got BHR coils about 6k miles ago at most. AEM intake. BHR catless midpipe. Stock headers stock catback. Fuel pump is stock as far as I know. Plugs haven't been changed since before the BHR coils and wires. It's been about 8k miles since I changed the plugs.
Anyway so the story behind my 8 is yesterday I was driving for about 8 miles after class to go to my gf house. Temp is about 25 degrees Fahrenheit. No problems going to class. While at a light the car idle dropped to 750 and jumped back up which is normal for my 8 to do that once in a while every few weeks. Then I get to a second stop light and it can't find a good idle spot goes from 800 to 750 to 1.2k then to 500. Once it went to 500 I revved it for a second. Then it did it again about 30 seconds later and went below 500 and I tried revving but it was too late it died on me. I pushed it to the gas station next to me with some help. I let it cool down for about 45 mins and got it running again. I decided to drive back home instead of going forth to my gf house. The car died again at a light about 10 miles after the first one. I have to keep it idling with the gas or else it will eventually slow from 800 to 0.
I really could use some help please.

same issues
i was also having the same issues but with a changing of the ignition coils, spark plugs, wires and a cleaning of the MAF sensor. the idle issue has disappeared and it is now running as smooth as ever.
Thank you to everyone for the help and info.

Same issue
Having the same issue as dark myth, I have a 2007 rx8 with aem intake, and no cat as well. Any immediate suggestions? Should I just be getting the compression test, its just odd all of a sudden while driving it started dying off then the check engine light went on.

if u recently pulled ur battery.
check throttle body, when hold under sunlight you SHOULD see bit of light pass thru the top and bottom of the butterfly,
if none, or the light is not smooth like a new moon, then u should clean it.
I seen a Rx8 that has all the gap clogged up with carbon, the car wouldn't even idle, clean and everything back to normal

My check engine light is on too BTW, I got it checked and it said system is lean, the thing that worries me most is that I moved the cai one time cuz I had to get something under it and one of the vents came out of place and I'm not sure if its back correctly, but I don't think that would cause this issue would it? I can't get my car jacked at home as its lowered so I can't really take the front bumper off to check it all.

However if you did not re-assemble everything correctly from the MAF sensor back then you could have a massive vacuum leak.
And a big vacuum leak can absolutely this could cause a system too lean.
Would be worth checking out and even with a lowered car I don't see why you need to lift the car up to get the front bumper off.
For that matter the leak if there is one is likely in the engine bay not in the front bumper area.

By the vents I mean the pre filters within the rubber joins for the cold air intake tube, I had the engine itself tested for vacuum leaks and there are none. I know a prefilter might be off but I don't think it could cause this unless it's throwing off the maf sensor. The reason I can't get the front bumper off is because I can't undo the bolts inside the wheel well without taking my front tires off at the ride height it is at. I was thinking maybe I will check my coils today

Mmmm yeah those inner wheel well bolts can be tricky.
I'm pretty sure the last time I did it by turning the wheel all the way to left then for the otherside to the right... but that's neither here nor there
Those are not PRE-FILTERS they are flow straighteners to stop air turbulence and provide the Maf with a nice even flow.
I would still think that if these are incorrectly installed it could cause a System To Lean.
Was the engine test for vacuum leaks or compression?
It would still be worth your while to look/listen around for vacuum leaks especially since you had the intake apart.
You shouldn't need to take the front bumper of to check the Maf screens or for Vacuum leaks around the UIM.
Make sure all the hoses are connected to the AEM intake and that the vacuum port for the VFLAD is still capped off. The vflad is ofter removed with an intake mod and this port can sometimes be forgotten or the cap for the port can fall off. It's located underneath the UIM right behind the TB

Oh they're maf screens I had no idea because one time I took the mid section of the pipe apart to try and get some give so I could take out the air filter to be cleaned but it didn't end up working but I forgot about those filters within the rubber joins, I went to a Mitsubishi tech and he tested my engine for vacuum leaks on the engine. I have an appointment with signature Mazda tmr morning should I just cancle that and check my cai first otherwise I'll be hlpaying an arm and a leg for them to find nothing. I was also having them look at my clutch pedal the same day because I have the extended warranty on that

Small update I checked the vfad port and it is capped, I also checked the ignition coils and both trailing coils are good, I didn't bother checking the other two as my engine started fine and they wouldn't cause idling issues. One thing to note I did smack the wires leading to the maf sensor while my car was on and the idle started to stabalize. But there was still some massive backfiring. Not sure if this changes things. A side note at Mitsubishi the tech had already checked my maf sensor for carbon buildup and there was none.

I merely started the car inside the garage and the rpms were fluctuating, at the same time my engine was constantly backfiring and vibrating the car. After smacking the maf the idle stabilized and the backfiring wasn't as severe but it was still constantly backfiring

Don't really want to try starting it up again today as I have to drive it tomorrow to a Mazda dealer for my clutch pedal and the idle issue for a 1 hour diagnosis. I'll take video tomorrow morning when I start for my drive there. just want to see if its something in the engine they can find with their equipment vs my limited equipment and knowledge. I know a old Mazda tech who now works at Mitsubishi and he sent me to a friend there.

If push comes to shove and I can't figure it out I'll take it to tekam automotive which is a shop I live by that is a pure rotary engine shop that's been around for agessssss. I was told they find the issues within a fraction of the time of a Mazda dealer for a fraction of the cost.

RX8 will not stay on. Dies at idle
I just cleaned my MAF and Throttle Body and the car stalls at idle. Check engine light just came on also and I got it read at autozone. Came up O2 sensor. Anyone know the solution for this?
