Reset the CEL help
I made a post earlier about a CEL P0455 that my car got yesterday. I've been trying to find how to reset the CEL but all I can find is "it will turn off after a certain amount of drive cycles". What is the exact amount of drive cycles needed before it will turn off? And will it turn off even if the problem remains? Because I'm hoping it is only a faulty gas cap or maybe my last fill up I didn't tighten all the way and made it pop on. So what I'm wondering is if it was just loose maybe it's ok now since I've tightend it better now and the CEL will go away. Because at this point it's been just about two days and several drive cycles so I dont know what to think here.

King,
I have a scanner and it shows when different part of the car done their testing. EVAP testing is the one that takes the most and it is the one related to gas cap. After I reset the CEL it took about a week for EVAP do do the testing. My work is about 8 miles and few day I go out for lunch. So it takes about 160 miles and 20 warm up cycles or a combination. Anyway you can remove your battery negative for a while and reset it that way. If it don't come back after 7 0r 10 days you know it was the gas cap.
BTW you can go to Autozone and have them read your code for free befor resetting it and post it here for help.

Update! Bought an Autozone gas cap and after a couple of days/driving cycles the CEL has seemed to have gone away on it's own. Seems to be all ok now. It's been a day since the light has went off and it hasn't come back on since. Thanks for the help and input.

Alrighty, the CEL has come back on again. I brought it back to Autozone and had them check it and again it's the same code. P0455, so I'm guessing it wasn't the gas cap? This is strange to me because a day after I replaced the gas cap along with 3 days of drive cycles the light had went off on it's own so I assumed the problem was fixed with the new gas cap? Would the CEL go off if a problem was still there?

Did you recently get gas? If you don't put your gas cap on tight, the light gonna come back on. You should turn it until you hear click at least 3 times. Also you might have some other problem
P0455 is "EVAP system leak detected (very large leak)"

Yes, since I replaced the gas cap I make sure to turn it several times. My concerns and questions now are, if it wasn't a bad gas cap why did the CEL go off on it's own after I replaced it? Also, if it's not a problem with the gas cap why did it go off at all? Wouldn't the light remain on if a problem was still there? And if it's not a faulty gas cap and it's a problem with the other 4 possible problems that come with P0455 how bad is it driving around with any of those? Any help is greatly appreciated thank you.

I had a P0456 code which is a small EVAP leak. I checked my gas cap also but its fine. My guess is that it is a vaccuum leak. I checked my intake hoses and tightened them just to make sure that was it. I have a scanner so I cleared the code so we'll see what happens. I'd inquire at a Mazda dealership if I were you. I plan on taking mine in at some point in the near future, if you still haven't figured it out, I'll ask them what it could be.
