i was looking at the directions.

Do you have to take off the rear bumper to have the stuff checked out? i have an aftermarket bumper and might glue some parts to make it fit better. thanks.

still waiting on my letter.

In a prior post I stated that Mazda Service told me I should have already received the letter. They had a bad zip code on my record and had to resend it. If I hadn't called I would have waited forever for the letter! I wanted to get it addressed as leaving on Monday for a long trip with the RX8 and won't be back home till Labor Day.

The service manager called me today and apologized - she had completely misread the work record when she told me they were replacing the tank! She also said they had had the parts for the recall for my appointment but must have used them on another vehicle before I came in.

All turned out OK as they also were waiting on a HVAC control module to take care of the A/C getting warm on long trips and they gave me a rental car at their expense for the week + they had the car in. Picking it up tomorrow.

The service manager also told me they have done a bunch of these (starting with what they had on the lot). They only had one customer with a gas tank with some deformation that had to be replaced.

I talked to the service guy at the dealership where I bought my RX8 yesterday. He said they haven't even gotten the parts for this recall yet and can't do anything. He also said that it only effects some, not all, of the rx8's? And that he can't do anything until Mazda sends me a letter. He said they're starting in other parts of the country and in more "problematic" states or something. Any validity to this? I'm registered on mazdausa.com and it still doesn't say anything under recalls even.

I also asked about the R flash and he said it isn't that big of a deal. He told me to not worry about it and if I need an oil change just get it done at that time. He said it was more for the startup/flooding issues and people using less than premium gas? Is that correct?

Dub,

I think your service tech is an idiot.

TECHNICALLY: it does not affect all RX-8 but the odds of yours being built after July '05 (only ones NOT affected) is slim. Translation: you probably need to have the flash done to comply with the recall.

Dealerships should have the parts in by now.

Wait for your letter to arrive just to be on the safe side.

ddub- he is speakign a different lingo so stuff gets lost in translation AND he isnt up to speed on the issue.

he is correct that the problem only effects a handful of cars. BUT the recall is for every RX-8. see the difference? he could do it before the letter if he wanted as it shows in your vin inquiry that it needs to be done. it wont show on musa.com until the letters start heading out. and if he was really up to speed and had read the documents himself and understood them he would know that a flash to the most current is neccesssary part of the recall work. so no he is not correct about that.

also he should have blankets in stock. each dealer was portioned a number of blankets based on sales. unless he already did a number of cars(and since no one has a letter yet its doubtful) he has the part in stock.

I'm sure you are right - just posting what the Mazda rep on the 800# said - confirmed that my car had the recall and checked my address. They had the zip wrong and said that must by why I didn't receive it.

Mazda have made an amendment to the recall instructions which clarifies the throttle operation with the new flash when in Free Rev mode.

If the revs have defaulted back to idle because the car has been high revving while stationary, to get normal throttle ops back all you have to do is fully release then re-apply throttle. Or switch the ignition off, then restart.

Hmm interesting. But yes he's a moron, I've learned this in my times talking to him/the parts dept for my 2nd gen rx7. He claimed that the flash was to help prevent the rx8 from pinging, and then he said, and I quote "But it's a rotary, rotaries don't ping ever." I was stupified when I heard that.

Oh well, I really don't want to have to get the flash, I have underdrive pulleys on and don't want the CEL to show when they do the reflash...

No......they have found a few tanks with fuel weeps, and a number of deformed tanks due to exposure to high heat. No fires due to rear end impacts, that I'm aware of anyway.

After I picked up my car today before I drove off I noticed that the DSC light was blinking and my TCS light was on as well. They took my car back and later reported to me that my "angle sensor" was malfunctioning and I need a new one.

They had performed the recall procedure and flashed my car as well. As I mentioned above, they also replaced the steearing mechanism inside that was causing a squeeking noise when I turned the wheel. Does anyone know what this angle sensor is?

They apparently had a hard time giving me the steering parts for free since my warranty had been voided. Rightly so though they gave me the parts. I just hope that they will also give me this...

Anyone have any info on what an angle sensor is? This all happened after I got the flash. My CEL light is on right now too though I dont think there is anything connected to the CEL. Also, does anyone know if the steering internals are linked to this angle sensor? Whatever that means haha.. Thankx....

Those pictures should be a wake up call to those folks who want to cover up any part of the 3rd brake light with a "cute" RX-8 sticker. You want to be seen when stopped or want your light to look "cute"? I would rather be seen.

That's the problem of a car that stops in half the distance of most everything on the road.

Yeah, you save your *** from hitting the guy in front of you, but the guy behind you, even if paying attention, isn't gonna stop in time.

That's why whenever I slam on the brakes I swerve onto the shoulder, not so I don't hit the guy in front of me, but so the guy behind me can occupy the space that I should have been occupying. And if I'm in a middle lane I just pray and do my best not to stop short.
