Rattling/ Grinding Sound

Hey all, this is my first post in the forums, but not my first visit. I have been all over the forums looking for an issue that I'm having but it seems to possibly be a mixture of some of the answers I've encountered. I found a post on it and it was mainly people expressing that they have experienced the same thing but no answers as to what it was.

Anyway, I am hearing a rattling/ grinding sound, definitely metal on metal, when starting moving forward. I have let my car warm-up for 10 minutes and it still happens, so I don't believe that's the issue.

I have read a lot about the throw out, but it doesn't make the sound when idling or driving at high RPM's, only going from N to 1st from a stop, red lights, stop signs, etc. Today I attempted to try and start in 2nd from all of my stops, it worked and there was no sound, therefore I have deduced that it is probably only an issue with first gear.

I just dropped about $6,000 on a new transmission less than 20,000 miles ago, and had my engine coils replaced about 2 weeks ago. It was shortly after the coils that I started hearing the problem. I'm concerned about more wonderfully costly repairs so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, if it helps, its an '04 MT, I live in Georgia, so temperatures have just started to get cooler, but its been doing this in the warm weather and cooler weather.
I use nothing but premium gas.
I changed my oil about a week ago.
It has progressively gotten worse.
Just a few more factors to try and eliminate some potential issues.
Did some more research more factors to exclude:
This is not my first Manual, had an MX3 MT put 300k on it with minor fixes here and there
Listened to the sound on youtube of "marbles" not even close to the sound that I'm hearing
If I start and slowly transition to 1st the sound is drawn out and longer;
if I rev to about 5k before I release the clutch to go into 1st the sound is minimal
That's all I have to add for now, I'll keep researching and try to narrow it down. Once again any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Update...

Alright, I just got a letter in the mail from Mazda about a recall on the clutch pedal assembly my hope is that this is the issue that I'm having with the car, I will get back with everyone when I find something out. Also an update, it is now making the sound in 1st through 3rd gear, therefore it could be some of the issues listed online. I'll post back to let everyone know the outcome.

make sure your allowing the synchros to spin up and not forcing it into gear with an incredible amount of force.

Thanks for the input, I'm calling the dealer today to ask about the clutch assembly, my concern is that the transmission was replaced earlier this year and I am hoping that they replaced it with an old clutch assembly... but at least I can hopefully get my money back for the initial transmission fix. I'll keep everyone posted. Also, there have been times in which I have forced the car in to gear, so I'd say that definitely sound advise.

There is not a snowballs chance in Hell that they will pay for your transmission because of the clutch pedal problem....guess it won't hurt to ask

They bitched about changing out the pedal assemblies.....so good luck

Ha, yeah sorry, let me clarify... I will see if they will pay me back for the clutch assembly that was replaced at the same time as my transmission replacement. I wish I could punch the guy in the face who owned my 8 before me, and after punching him in the face I'd take the money that it cost me to have to transmission replaced. That would be the only way I'd get the money back for that, lol.

So you said it started when you did your coils. Did you replace your plugs at the same time? If so did you accidentally bump/bang something when installing your wheel that would cause a rub on your wheel, caliper, etc?

Good thought, definitely something to check. I didn't do the work myself, but there's always a chance that the guy doing the repair didn't know what he was doing or was sloppy about it. When I came to the shop to check on my car and the guys had just googled the layout of the engine... there's a chance they weren't too sure about what they were doing.

Sorry for the delayed solution post, after having to test drive the car for them to replicate the sound that they couldn't, we found that it was coming from my Catalitic Converter... They informed me that I caught the problem a few thousand miles before it became an actual problem. I would take it to have it checked out early before it becomes a problem.

wow.... i would have never guessed that it would be the cat... mine deffinitely sounds like the transmission, but so did yours.... I will have to take mine and get the cat checked out. I actually know its a bit rusty and not looking so great so it'll be worth getting it checked out. Thanks a lot man! good for thought for me.

Ill take a video eventually and upload it so people can hear EXACTLY the sound that I am. I asked my mechanic to take a ride with me a week ago and listen to it. Maybe because the car was already warm it was reluctant to do it, but I could not get the maximum loudness that i have heard the noise at. The mechanic said it sounded like gear noises and not to be too concerned because to fix it it would mean overhauling the tranny. And if it isnt hurting anything, than I probably will just live with it.
