Was the car in a serious accident or was the "totalled" thing a joke? Maybe that had something to do with it.

That's a lot of problems. Something's not quite right here.

You're referring to the airbag wiring harness recall which affected some earlier built cars. I wouldn't exactly classify this as something that went wrong with your car - it was replaced by the dealer at no cost because a design issue was discovered. Welcome to being an early adopter to a new car model.

QUOTE:The dealer told me that the reason there are a lot of used 8's with low mileage and in mint condition is because people don't think fuel consumption is as high as figures state.

I'm sure this is true in some cases. But what I can't understand is people spending about $7000 per year in total true cost of ownership of their car, and then complaining when gas costs them maybe $25-$35 per month more than they expected. You also see the same thing on the news all the time in regard to other cars besides the RX-8 because of the high gas prices. Criminy, you've been paying $7000 per year and now $7300 is going to break you?

The former RX-8 owners you refer to were willing to take maybe a $8000-$10,000 loss on what they paid for the car because of that ? That would be financial folly.

I have a a place on the driver side seat (right hand thigh bolster") where the padding is too thin or something, it's pretty uncomfortable for anything longer than 1/2 an hour. That's the only real "problem" I've had with my car that sounds anything like what you've mentioned. It may merit some looking into on my part.

Didn't Mazda offer to buy back cars when the horsepower-gate broke? Wouldn't that account for quite a few LOW mileage 2004's on dealer lots at low prices? I can't see that many people dumping a car that they've only had long enough to realize the initial devaluation.

Question Did your car just fall apart or did it get help?

I have had mine since November 2003. I have put some mods in the car, ie exhaust, racing clutch (earlier than intended due to blowing up the stock clutch on the race track) piggy back ecu and after market front wing, side skirts, hood and rear bumper.

The interior looks as good as the day I picked up the car side from the dirt that sneaks in between cleanings.

So if I compare may experience with the car to what you are describing, either you are in fact a bull in the china closet or you got a little to friendly with another car on the road.

Unless you had an accident, why would you replace the air bags?
