Hi I have problem with my air pump when the car is cold and I turn my key to ignition air pump its starts on and turn off and this same for about 3 times i don't know what is the problem I read at google thet could be air pump relay but I can't find it at my car can somebody tell me where can I find "air pump relay"

When You turn key to on position You can hear from THROTTLE and RELAY fuel (from transmiter box) knock, knock,.... for about 5 sek. when you turn your key on (when car Is hot)

Air pump is only used for emission in order to heat up the cat(catalytic converter) and is usually on for no more than 2-3 minutes(if that) on initial start-up.
The reality is, you don't even really need it and if you do a search, you will find ways to take it out.

Does that answer your questions? When it goes bad, it usually whines pretty well.

The true reality is that it's needed if you care about air quality and accept responsibility in doing your part to minimize impacting the environment any more than you can.

Are you sure your battery terminals are good and tight?

The air pump relay is located where the PCM/ECU is, under the black plastic cover in the left front corner of the engine bay , it has 4 heavy wires , Red , Black with yellow stripe , and 2 Black wires. It is about 2"x2" square , it is not a "normal" type of relay. If you can access a workshop manual , there is a procedure to test said relay.

 

Sounds like the pump is working ??

If the relay wasn't working it would not come on...and there would be no hairdryer sound

Is the car turning over when you turn the key ( cranking?)

What is the problem? - air pump sounds normal.

But U can see the air pump is starting without working engine.
And u can hear a knock knock from THROTTLE and from RELAY fuel (from transmiter box)

 

Mine , when connected, would run before starting,if the motor was cold.Im sure this is normal.

 

CRO8TIA you are telling me the air pump will start before I start engine? Please take look at my video You will see there my problem: I put key turn to ingnition and wait 5 sek and in this 5 sek air pump is turning on and turning off this is taking about 3 times and when rpm are at 0-1000 this is normal?? I thing thet isn't good reation

when I start my engine at cold air pump works about 2 min and normaly turn off this for my is normaln when I start engine pump turn on But when I whant to start engine without crancing pump starts and turn off .

 

I am still unsure what is happening with your car. Does it start and run? If you disconnect the airpump does it run properly? I can't tell if you are having airpump problems...or problems with the engine running?

 

What I gather is this.....................car operates(runs normally) as does the air pump when he jumps in and starts it like normal.

He seems to indicate that turning the ignition to "on" when cold........but not cranking it over results in the air pump starting and stopping about every three seconds. (I'm not sure if this is normal or not?????) I've never tried it.......I guess I could and see........maybe this weekend.

Anyway.................he seems to also hear some knocking or ticking under this same condition and this could very well be the relay for the air pump as it cycles in that same approx. 3 second rate. He last said he hears a "knock knock from THROTTLE and from RELAY fuel (from transmiter box)" and I think this may be normal as well with the various checks and stuff that the computer/car would be doing at this point in time, but I'm not really sure. Guess someone needs to go turn on their car when cold(without starting) and see what all happens.


Is that what everybody else is sort of understanding to this point or did I totally mess it up?

 

mazurfer everything you write is ok but I must add : when I whant start car and I turn key to on (no cracking) I hear knock knock EXACTLY in this same time when Air Pump is turning on and off. I have do this procedure for about 2 mayby 3 times and my car have problem with start it's look like engine was floded but is starts.

The problem with air pump stars about 20.04.2011 I never before HEAR something like air pump or anything before
