KY P0456 Small Evap Leak (Purge Valve)

I have recently had issues starting my 2004 RX-8 after filling up with gas. The check engine light has come on giving me the P0456 error code. I took the car to the dealership and they told me that there is a small evap leak from purge valve and catch tank in upper intake manifold.

They said this purge valve is built into the manifold and that the entire thing would have to be replaced. I just wanted to ask if anyone on here had any suggestions, or am I going to have no choice but to order this expensive part (that they do not have in stock and have no ETA on when they can get it) or if there is anything else I might be able to try or do? Would this be something some other "alternate, and cheaper" mechanic may be able to fix or would have a clue about?

I haven't ordered the part or anything yet, just wanted to see what you all think?

You can order the purge solenoid valve separately, part #Z504-18-741A. You don't even have to remove the upper intake manifold to replace it, you can lift it up just enough to take the old solenoid out and put the new one in. It's the gold-colored part under the UIM just to the right of the oil filler neck:

Your sure this is the part they are talking about? The guy told me that it was made into the upper intake and that it can't be removed seperately so they would have to order the entire upper intake manifold and replace it for $1100.

If the part you are talking about is all that needs to be replaced, thats $75 and it looks like I could probably install it myself??? I just want to be certain before I buy anything ya know.

What does a Purge valve even do?

(I really appreciate your response and help by the way!!! Thanks!)

Purge valve opens to allow fuel vapours from the fuel system to purge into the intake manifold and be burnt unstead of venting into the atmosphere.

You can buy a used upper intake with all of the parts for around $100....hell if you lived closer you could have one of the 4 I have taking up space in my garage

Ask around in your local area and see if someone has one lying around

The purge solenoid can be removed... just a little tough to pull out.

Before you touch the purge solenoid, take off your gas cap. Look on the white side that faces into the filler neck and see if there is any rust/brown color on the valve in the middle. There is a TSB by mazda about water getting into the tether hole (plastic line that holds the gas cap to the car) and causing the valve to stay open in the cap which creates the small leak. I had this problem and replaced gas cap. Took care of it.
