Oil leak - or not .....

Took my car to the dealer to verify what I thought and they also agree that the front seal is leaking. They claim that to fix it you have to drop the motor and since its out you might as well do all the seals. I am out of warranty and their quote was around $2,500. Now my delima my car drives fine around town, the leak is not noticeable unless I am doing a 25 run on a track like Watkins Glen. I could most likely put another 100,000 miles on my 8 without it getting worse but I can't take it on the track anymore. If you like driving on tracks 3-4 times a year would your sink $3,000 in order to get another 2-3 of track time out if it? I was also thinking about getting a mazmart rebuilt and for a little more money have a well buit motor put in? I could do nothing and try and find a $4,000 track toy and tow it to events? I guess I have to decide if driving on the track is worth the money.

Get a $10 seal and fix it yourself . But read that Mazdatrix tech article first (that I didn't ).
Have a read of this thread about my 'learning experience' with this - but in particular -read the Mazdatrix tech article on how to take the front pulley off without dislodging the bearing. I got lucky with mine - I had the front wheels raised so that probably helped a lot as far as preventing the bearing drop problem ....

trying to diagnose a leak that i found yesterday. i lost about a half a quart (dipstick estimatation) in the last week. is this what you guys have found with the front main seal? i'm going to start pulling the intake off tonight, just in case i've premixed too heavily, but my leak shows the same spatter pattern in the photo above.

yeah. i found that there was oil pooling in the accordian-like intake hose. my guess is the crankcase vent. however, there was absolutely NO oil on the throttle plate. i changed my oil about 3 weeks ago ... perhaps i filled it too much.
this is baffling ...
i'm cleaning everything up and then i'll see if i can see where it's coming from.

Dropped my car off at JPRImports Monday. Couldn't pass up Mazmart's deal when he had a few blocks around. I am not getting anything fancy, just a Mazmart rebuild with their water pump. I also will be putting the Mazsport coils on it. The interesting stuff will happen when they get my core back. Paul promised to post about how the internals look on a 111,000 mile renesis that didn't 'blow', used Royal Purple & premix and has been tracked.

The most important part is, how does the side exhaust port look like, is it all clogged up with **** like most *Full Synthetic hater* saids.

Hmm, I remember someone here sent an email to the *oil guy* or something at Castrol a while ago right? and some typical Corporate bullshit came back and he treated as bible.
Next thing u know is that these Synthetic haters will give BS like *oh racing engines are diff cuz they rebuild after every race*, or *they in racing they dont have omp* blah blah blah blah blah blah.

actually, i think you may have hit the nail on the head. i didn't think of that and it would certainly explain why my engine bay went from being spotless to splashed with oil virtually overnight. i think you're because of two things: (1) as i said, the throttle plate was still spotless and all the oil i found was in the hose, and (2) the clamps that hold the hose on the air filter box were loose.
at any rate, i cleaned things up as much as i could and drove around tonight and so far, so good. i'll have to dedicate a day when i can get it up on a lift and clean the undertray. i can still smell it on the exhaust when i'm not moving. i'm definitely going to get an aftermarket filter and catch can though. having all of the stock stuff out of the car made such a pleasing difference to me.
thanks for your input. :D

goddamn it!!! 300+ miles the oil is back.
i'm going to pull things apart and probably start my own thread on the subject. i'll probably link it here and any advice will be appreciated.

for the record: i don't Swoope, but i'm just joshin' him. so i hope no dirty rumors start because of this my little joking comment.

i'm thinking maybe what i found was more a product of my not taking more time to clean everything last week. i had just gotten off the highway on Saturday (after driving 150 miles) when i noticed the smell and smoke returned and as soon i got home i looked and noticed a spot that i know i cleaned very well was splashed with oil again, so i guess i freaked. when i go back out to the garage tonight, i'm going to try to focus on cleaning things.
EDIT:
and i didn't fit the catch can because i still haven't bought one. however, i'm going to look for one online tonight.
