Back in January, one of the LED's on the gear indicator went out in my 8. When the dealership replaced the guages, they told me that the odometer was reset to 0 but that it is OK because they stamped in my warranty book the event marking the mileage at the time. I gave a little push back at the time, but they insisted that since they stamp the warranty book, it is no problem and won't de-value my car. I'm finding out not that is not the case.

I'm thinking that they did something wrong when they replaced it to lose my mileage and now they just don't want the hassle of fixing it. I have recently brought it up to them since I got it appraised and the dealerships are freaking out when they find out about the odometer and giving me BS apraisals of $11k, $12k for my car. They still contend that it doesn't de-value the car.

I guess my questions are:

1. Does anyone know the proper procedure for replacing the odometer in the RX-8?
2. Has anyone had their cluster replaced and their odometer wasn't reset to 0?

I just need a little ammo before I call Mazda NA Customer Support.

I had an old car that had the guage cluster replaced under warranty at the time and when I went to trade it, it did in fact hurt the trade in value of the care, even though there was documentation of the change taped into the door frame. From what I understand the dealer doesn't have to update the mileage on the odometer, they just have to document the mileage before the change.

I would push to get it updated, shouldn't be too hard to change with the new digital odometers.

Hehe its possible to change a digital odometer fairly easily from what I have seen. However I never have seen it done on a rx8. I say try to spush them to get it updated.

its in the can module - they have to "suck" in the info in the module with the WDS or Equivalent then drop that info into teh new module. its not dificult at all- the sevice manual makes it very clear and the Service tool gives on screen prompts as to what to do next.

however now that your old one is gone there is nothing to get the info from and no way to change it. check with your states attorneys general office if this is a violation of state law.

Alternatively, get another RX-8 with similar mileage to your car along to the dealership and have them suck the mileage out of that one.

Shouldn't cost you more than 24 cans of Bud!! Someone here will put their hand up, I'm sure .

Mileage is not "inhaled" when performing a PMI on a CAN module.

All the IDS inhales is the As Built data.

SPEEDOMETER REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
APPLICABLE MODELS

All Models
DESCRIPTION

In accordance with Federal regulations, follow the procedures listed below when replacing a speedometer.

NOTE:

1.

Mazda vehicles are manufactured with tamper-proof speedometers and the mileage can not be altered or adjusted.
2.

When a speedometer is replaced, the new speedometer will read zero (0).
3.

This procedure is extremely important to accurately represent actual vehicle mileage.
4.

The "Speedometer Replacement Label" referenced below is available through the Mazda Program Center for a limited time. Mazda Motor of America, Inc. is providing 1 sheet of 20 labels with this bulletin.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

1. Remove and replace the speedometer according to the workshop manual.

2. Complete the following information on the "Speedometer Replacement Label."

Mileage before speedometer replacement.
*

Date of replacement.
*

Dealer code.

3. Attach the label to the driver's side "B" pillar.


4. Complete the "Speedometer Replacement Record" in the Warranty Information Booklet referenced below.

I would hope that a simple device at the dealership wouldn't be able to change the mileage of clusters! that would lead to a whole knew realm of odo cheating.

Yeah..I make that sound alot this time of evening.

Many Asian import models take "speedometer tampering" in a different perspective.

The Japanese translation makes no real sense to us as U.S. consumers. They look at the speedo as a "part" and we look at it as the "vehicle". All U.S. models I have dealt with have a way to call and order a speedo/odometer to match with the correct mileage. This avoids rollback reports when the car is registered.

This has been addressed at the highest level. Sadly our vehicle will always re-start with 00.0

Had I known this or if the dealer trold me this before, I would have lived with the burnt out LED on the gear indicator.
