Radiator is blockage free, the water pump feels snug, I don't think it's lost an impeller or bearing or what have you.
I'm going to check how much a new thermostat is (I don't remember them being very expensive). Anyone have a how-to or shop manual on this replacement? : D
edit: oh... and the marbles in a can detonation that I heard the first time I overheated... it only lasted about 25-30 seconds and was only at idle. Anyone reckon that's enough to score the bejesus out of my rotor housing? Should I anticipate needing to worry about the engine?

UPDATE! : D
So, it was the thermostat. I took it out and the thing was cracked. Replacing it was a complete bitch, though.
Drove it to the gas station. topped up gas and oil. Drove it to the car wash. Then drove it an hour to home number 2. Temp didn't go near half way.
I am a happy man.

Yeah, you and me both.
Engine runs perfectly fine, I think. I'm still worried about the miac detonation, though.
My transmission is pretty noisey, though. Like when the clutch is in, it's dead quiet. And when it's not, it's noisey and ... crunchy sounding. I'm going to try and get audio of it.

If it overheated the MIAC likely was cavitation of the water pump as it tried to pump air/water.....after it spewed it all over your engine compartment
That won't hurt anything...as long as the motor didn't get hot enough to warp anything....and the fact it seems to be running OK now is a good sign
