Hey everyone, i installed my mazdaspeed coilovers awhile ago, already a month or so. I bought the coilovers secondhand from rockstar (former member). anyways, today i started having a heavy knocking for some reason while driving, and when me and a friend took a look, to my suprise that the shock snapped off the lower mount. The knocking came from the passenger side rear so we lifted the car and the shock is free, seemed like a clean snap off. how i found out it snapped off was while trying to realign the springs, a small cylinder piece fell on my head and after further observation, realized that the shock cylinder that mounts to the bottom support snapped off.

sorry i couldnt take a few pics, all i thought about was trying to fix this and it looks like i cant. the coilovers are warranty code orange and pretty much that means there is no warranty.

wondering what should i do about this? i contacted jason from onlinemazdaparts.com to see what help i can have. i'm wondering if there is anything i can do because right now, im so upset about the situation that i cant think. i paid 750 for these, maybe i got scammed? or maybe the engineering of the coilovers are just bad, either way, i dont have money to pay for a new suspension.... i have to revert back to stock but after installing a suspension.... man....

Im not 100% sure which part u're taking about but, it sounds like you might be able to get a rebuild.

I have HKS HiperMax III, and I know unless I crush it, I can get a rebuild. they have all parts.

i'll see what i can do about the pics, let me see if i can find a pic of it or snap a pic of it. how do i go about getting a rebuild, when i bought the coilovers, i bought them used and it didnt come with all the parts, the coilovers are made by eibach and i had to pay another 300 to buy helper springs and spacers...

 

#1 is pointing at the small shaft/bar that connects to #2 that's within the lower spring mount. so what happened is that number 1 snapped off the mount that is within number two, from what i could tell, its suppose to be one piece and welded or something within that mount, it snapped off and now that shaft (the content within that shaft is a small long cylinder that slides up and down shaft, the shaft is hollow. that small cylinder snapped right off. i had to install everything back together because i dont have time right now to try to fix it... i have obligations that are important to do... driving it, there is loud knocking and i believe right now, the that damper shaft is off its mounting point and resting on the spring mount....

 

Bring that to mazda and threaten to sue them if they dont give you a whole new set. That could have caused a deadly accident.

 

thought about that, will probably make an effort... im going to try to contact eibach themselves but most likely they will just tell me to call mazdaspeed...

 

quick update, installing rear oem suspension, took pics of the broken shock, could be rust..

anyways, i put back on the stock suspension on the rear currently running a "demon drop" look. really really sucks but atleast im safe for the moment.... if anyone has any advice for what i can do, let me know, apparently, me and and my friends believe that the previous seller drop this suspension in the snow causing them to wear down this much and the previous seller has been quite unreliable about this suspension do to the fact when i bought it, it was missing several parts and now i find out that he sold me a faulty suspension..

 

not rust, but rather the shaft had a threaded part that screws into the lower mount and it appears to have fractured which allowed the two pieces to separate

I would notify mazdaspeed and eibach, but try to stay mum on being a secondhand buyer, most warranties only apply to the original purchaser

 

wow - it looks like that thread is not man enough for the job ....

 

It's strong enough for the actual spring/shock forces, but if somebody force-twisted on it trying to align the mount etc. or possibly overtightened it when putting the pieces together during the manufacturing process

I don't like the design in general. It's a low cost way to join the two pieces, but once it breaks or has thread issues the entire shock is f'd

when you bolt the shock into the rear tower mount you have to align the lower mount properly relative to the upper mount, the same as with OE type shocks, you can't just force twist the mount around to align it after the fact, the exception is if you have pillowball/spherical bearing upper mounts rather than the rubber bushings, then it is free to rotate wherever you need it, the rubber bushings won't allow it to turn easily enough

 

what is a dspec for a 1000 alex.

i do thank you team for the help and i hope things get settled with this, i notified mazdaspeed and mazda already about this problem and they'll get back to me in a few days and i'll let you all know whats going on. thanks again for all your help.
