Loose Shifter?

So actually I've noticed this quite a while, well ever since I bought the car.

Does any of ya'll shifters wiggle around and the **** kinda rotate with the stick? And could you guys pull out the shifter as a whole?

I'm not really sure if this is my car's problem but I remember when I was test driving the 09s R3, it was nothing like mine.

Not really a concern, but I'd just like to know if there's anything wrong with it.

I'll try to get a video up cuz I know my words isn't quite self-explanatory.

Is it noisy as well? If it is...the bushing on the end of the shifter leaver is likely either loose or gone

Easy to check..just pull off the cover plate..remove the rubber cover...the small 10mm bolts holding on the shifter retaining ring and pull the shifter out and look at it

Errr....this concerns me. This makes it sound like either the plastic cup to the shifter is missing or cracked or that the metal top plate that holds the shifter in is missing. You should have no play coming upward on your shifter.

And we are talking about a MT car...right?

Take a look at the DIY for a short shifter install and you will see the parts I was talkin about.

Pull the console off..and have a look..if the retaining bolts are loose..the shifter will come up and down...

Likely they will be missing if that is the case....does your car have a stock shifter ot an Axilflow SS>

The rotating thing could just be the **** Does it go into reverse easily? If it is loose, the interlock would likely be difficult to use...

Yea, i'm gonna try and look at that today^

but stock or short shifter, i don't really know, i suspect the previous owner kinda cut the stock shifter, cuz it's not quite the length of a stock shifter nor a axielflow length

nope, the rotating thing's definitely not the ****, the stick itself rotates with the ****

Lucky for you I have the same shift ****. I want to say that the bottom of the shift **** is level with the top bevel around the shift boot with an OEM shifter. With the AFE I was able 1/2" or so into the boot.

So it is a little higher than the bevel but not much...maybe 1/2" or less. I took pictures but they refuse to get delivered or uploaded from my phone. Got somewhere I can MMS them to?

So... looking at DeViLbOi's pics. I found out that my shifter's way higher than what's stock should be, anybody else think so?

I think you need to quit playing photo tag, remove the center console, and look at the shifter and how its mounted.
More time is wasted playing guessing games than it would take to remove the center console.

Why are you so scared to look at your car and see what is actually wrong? You knew what...a week ago...that something was wrong with your car? Are you really that afraid of 5 little clips and a hunk of rubber?

Wow, I've never heard of the shifter breaking... other than the cup at the bottom... but that wouldn't make the whole assembly twist.
I think that the stock shifter has a rubber isolation in the middle of the stick so maybe this piece has broken free? That would explain what you're experiencing.
Once you're in there maybe put in an AFE SS?
Don't worry: This is a very easy part of the car to work on!

You don't need a garage...heck I could swap out a shifter at a stop light...and I'm not overly mechanically inclined. Hopefully you haven't damaged your tranny somehow for running that way for so long.

You have no idea how hard it is to pull that head out of the plastic.

Hm... so as annoying as it is, I'm just gonna bite the bullet and get a AF SS, I tried hammering that bitch back down into the shifter, but it seems like some kinda thread or head was broken off before, so urgh. Another $280 gone from my RX-8 fund
