Loose Shifter?

So actually I've noticed this quite a while, well ever since I bought the car.

Does any of ya'll shifters wiggle around and the knob kinda rotate with the stick? And could you guys pull out the shifter as a whole?

I'm not really sure if this is my car's problem but I remember when I was test driving the 09s R3, it was nothing like mine.

Not really a concern, but I'd just like to know if there's anything wrong with it.

I'll try to get a video up cuz I know my words isn't quite self-explanatory.

Is it noisy as well? If it is...the bushing on the end of the shifter leaver is likely either loose or gone

Easy to check..just pull off the cover plate..remove the rubber cover...the small 10mm bolts holding on the shifter retaining ring and pull the shifter out and look at it :)

not really noisy.... but the weird thing that scared the crap outta me most is... i can pull the thing up and rotate and wiggle arround =_=

Errr....this concerns me. This makes it sound like either the plastic cup to the shifter is missing or cracked or that the metal top plate that holds the shifter in is missing. You should have no play coming upward on your shifter.

And we are talking about a MT car...right?

dezau 10-08-2010 03:40 PM

that's whats i've been thinking... cuz... none of the cars i've driven doest this... and... yep MT.. lol if an AT car does that i'd be shittin my pants now

DeViLbOi 10-08-2010 03:52 PM

Take a look at the DIY for a short shifter install and you will see the parts I was talkin about.

dannobre 10-08-2010 03:54 PM

Pull the console off..and have a look..if the retaining bolts are loose..the shifter will come up and down...

Likely they will be missing if that is the case....does your car have a stock shifter ot an Axilflow SS>

The rotating thing could just be the knob ;) Does it go into reverse easily? If it is loose, the interlock would likely be difficult to use...

Yea, i'm gonna try and look at that today^

but stock or short shifter, i don't really know, i suspect the previous owner kinda cut the stock shifter, cuz it's not quite the length of a stock shifter nor a axielflow length

nope, the rotating thing's definitely not the knob, the stick itself rotates with the knob

Your shifter looks long actually...Ill take a photo before I head home similar to your bottom pict for you to compare to.

dezau 10-08-2010 05:15 PM

thanks man appreciate it

chino0314 10-08-2010 05:27 PM

mine is about 2in shorter than that :/

DeViLbOi 10-08-2010 05:42 PM

Lucky for you I have the same shift knob. I want to say that the bottom of the shift knob is level with the top bevel around the shift boot with an OEM shifter. With the AFE I was able 1/2" or so into the boot.

DeViLbOi 10-08-2010 07:22 PM

So it is a little higher than the bevel but not much...maybe 1/2" or less. I took pictures but they refuse to get delivered or uploaded from my phone. Got somewhere I can MMS them to?

So... looking at DeViLbOi's pics. I found out that my shifter's way higher than what's stock should be, anybody else think so?

Jon316G 10-08-2010 08:05 PM

I think you need to quit playing photo tag, remove the center console, and look at the shifter and how its mounted.
More time is wasted playing guessing games than it would take to remove the center console.

dezau 10-08-2010 08:51 PM

considering my all blue interior, i'd have to wait till tmr to do so.. thanks for your input though

DocBeech 10-08-2010 10:23 PM

thats what flashlights are for, go buy a 1 watt head lamp.

dezau 10-08-2010 11:28 PM

right.. cuz that's just easier than doing it in broad daylight

dezau 10-13-2010 10:36 PM

okieeeee guyss there's definitely sth wrong with mine, i just drove my frd's 8 and his feels really solid like every MT i've driven. i'm gonna try and take a look at it tmr hmmmm fuckkkk

DeViLbOi 10-14-2010 05:54 AM

Why are you so scared to look at your car and see what is actually wrong? You knew what...a week ago...that something was wrong with your car? Are you really that afraid of 5 little clips and a hunk of rubber?

DarkBrew 10-14-2010 06:10 AM

Wow, I've never heard of the shifter breaking... other than the cup at the bottom... but that wouldn't make the whole assembly twist.
I think that the stock shifter has a rubber isolation in the middle of the stick so maybe this piece has broken free? That would explain what you're experiencing.
Once you're in there maybe put in an AFE SS?
Don't worry: This is a very easy part of the car to work on!

dezau 10-14-2010 10:26 AM

lol nah... i just didn't really have time to. Plus I don't have a garage like most of you guys :( But yeah, I'll have time today, gonna take some pics and see WTF's up!?!, and nah lol I've been noticing this problem the first day I bought the car. uh... 4/18/09 lol

DeViLbOi 10-14-2010 10:31 AM

You don't need a garage...heck I could swap out a shifter at a stop light...and I'm not overly mechanically inclined. Hopefully you haven't damaged your tranny somehow for running that way for so long.

Attachment 252442
Seems normal right? hm

Attachment 252443
Nope... bet you've never seen anything like that huh! lol
Attachment 252444
so yea, the shifter head's kinda stuck and it's kinda broken off with the shifter itself

You have no idea how hard it is to pull that head out of the plastic.

Hm... so as annoying as it is, I'm just gonna bite the bullet and get a AF SS, I tried hammering that bitch back down into the shifter, but it seems like some kinda thread or head was broken off before, so urgh. Another $280 gone from my RX-8 fund :(
