Little Lug Nut problem
Little Lug Nut problem
So I go to switch to winter tires today, get first three wheels off no problem.
Then I come to my left front wheel. Lo and behold, the lock nut is STRIPPED.
the pattern is worn down and whenever I try to loosen it, the key pops out.
HOW THE HELL do I get this nut off?
I tried an impact wrench, didnt slip, but it was an electric wrench so didnt have enough torque to budge it.
Please help, big snowfall tomorrow and I want to get it done!!!
Any ideas guys??

There are special sockets for removing these...Snap-on makes them...you hammer them on and use an impact gun to remove...I'd take it to a good tire or alignment place they should have them
cool, I think thats what Ill do.
My neighbour owns a tire shop so im pretty sure he has something that will do it.
cant wait to get them off, too bad theres a total snowcover now.
damnit!
Anyways, thanks guys.
Is there anything I can get that snaps on? like, retail wise?

Oh well, Turns out I pay for the dealers stupiditiy again.
Why are dealers so underqualified sometimes? Youd think you would pay a premium for exceptional service, not pay more for worse service.

This is kinda off topic, but I lost a lug nut once. Not the special locking ones, just an ordinary lug nut and I thought hey I"ll just grab one when I"m at O'reily's getting oil, but they didn't carry them. (Wasn't too surprised). So I had to go to mazda who charged me $6.50! For One!

Paul.
Surprising that they charged you. Mine said they have to take the stock ones off to put the locking ones in and they let me have as many as I wanted. They had a whole box of them. I got a whole new set just in case. You should talk to the service guy, they should be able to hook you up.
If you're going to let garage-monkeys do your wheels, replace the locking nuts with the originals before taking it in. When you get it back, loosen and re-tighten all of the lugnuts by hand, with a torque wrench, to specs, including the locking nuts if you desire.
Once again, BEWARE.
I have been warned by a Mazda shop owner who properly torques all the wheels of the cars he works on to just take them off. He owns an 8 himself. I could be mistaken but I think that part of the problem is the required torque being in excess of 100 lb/ft. Most Mazdas used to be 67 to 83.

get rid of all the OE lugs and lock - they are complete POS, replace them with a quality aftermarket lug/lock set
I prefer a light coating of anti-sieze on the stud threads but you have to account for the lubricity with a slightly lower torque setting
