Jerking motion while cold- AT

Hello I am reposting this here since I mistakenly posted it in the Series 2 forum.

I have a 2004 automatic rx8 with 98k miles. Whenever it changes gears it makes a jerking motion (back and forth). It only happens when the engine is cold (before temperature needle gets to the middle) and going about 20-35mph. Once it warms up it doesn't do it anymore.

I took it to the stealership yesterday and they said the transmission needs to be replaced and it would cost about $3500.

Any suggestions??? Should I believe the dealership??

Thank you so much for any advice!

My 2006 AT 90km does the same when cold, when I leave in morning in a rush, but Just always make sure the car is warmed up a bit before driving. I'm not a technician but IMO don't think you need a new transmission thats crazy unless its doing the same thing when warm.

Your trans is fine. When was the last time you had the trnasmission fluid flushed and replaced?

stealership is probably just trying to get you to spend money...maybe you should let it warm up before a drive?

I bought the car in November from this same Mazda stealership and I am assuming they flushed the transmission fluid since it looks pretty clean.

Which "mode" are you using, manual or auto shift?

As Invasion said, your transmission is ok. The problems you are experiencing are engine lugging and the transmission shifting in and out of overdrive. Try using the manual mode; at that speed (25-30 mph) you should be in 2nd gear.
