Issue Entering Gears/Transmission Issue

Hey everyone! I just need some help finding a final diagnosis for my car. We'll be taking the transmission apart to inspect everything this weekend but I'd like to get a head start diagnosing my issue.

To begin, this weekend while driving on the highway, I attempted to downshift and I was locked out of 5th gear (tranny would grind if I tried to enter it). I tried to re-enter 6th and i was also locked out. I pulled over and found it nearly impossible to enter any gear unless the car was at veryy low speeds (0-10mph). It would go into gear on rare occasions but essentially, it seems like the input shaft is having a hard time matching the crankshaft speed or the clutch isn't disengaging. On the rare occasions it does enter gear, the transmission makes a rattling noise as it spins up the rpms to match my current speed.

As of right now, i believe the pilot bearing has failed but I would love other opinion on the issue.

-Symptoms noticed-

-The Clutch assembly is not moving side to side(feels tight and secure), the pressure feels like it always has when i depress the clutch pedal.

-No visible leaks near the master cylinder and slave or a noticeable drop in fluid reservoir

-When the clutch is being re-engaged (letting off the pedal) after i slip the shifter into gear, you can hear a rattling noise from the front of the car.

-The clutch is not slipping

-Car shifts into gear perfectly when its turned off

-There's always been a slight squeaking noise when i depress the clutch pedal (Even before this issue starting)

Thanks!

Side Note: Yes i have searched nearly everything on the forum on this topic. Please don't reply if you're just going to say "use the seach function n00b"..

Sounds like a classic case of bad synchros to me.

Ahh that's what I was hoping not to hear lol. Would the synchros affect a car that's at idle though? Its equally as difficult to put into gear whether its at 900 rpm or 6000 rpm

I mean it could be more than one thing, but generally if the clutch is that bad it will make a lot of noise.

I'm ruling out the clutch at the moment since there's no slipping and its always made a slight squeaking noise form the throwout bearing. The pilot bearing seems like the main culprit lol. Opinions on the pilot bearing?

Hard to say without pulling it apart. but honestly I have never seen a bad pilot bearing in an RX-8, I have seen plenty of destroyed throw out bearings and bent clutch fingers but those car always made a lot of noise to let you know. Only one way to find out though

So we pulled the transmission today and here's the damage! The throwout bearing had failed and a piece of metal had broken off the clutch plate and was grinding down everything around it including the flywheel lol.

New ACT flywheel and Exedy clutch on the way

One thing i noticed is that if the clutch pedal starts to squeak it could be a sign that the pedal assembly is on its way out.
