HAHAHAHAHAAH!!!!!!
Ok, SO i've had my 8 since jun 04. Have no flooded it ONCE!!! I'm storing it for the winter and haven't touched it in just over a month now.. Well it turns out I didn't park the car close enough to the house so my bloody DAD decides to move it without telling me..
Since the first day I got my 8 I told everyone in my house, you touch the car or do anything like move it YOU WAIT FOR THE ENGINE TO WARM UP!!!
So i'm about to go out with friends right now and since the weather is decent I wanted to take the 8 out, but my god damn car won't start!!!!!!! I just asked my dad who moved it (my seat was off a bit) and he said I did, his response is well i just moved it 2 feet why would it flood!!
GGGGAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.. I'm so pissed off!!! bloody hell! I've told him at least ocne a week for the last year! And he still didn't listen, his response was "well that's a pretty shitty car" WTF!!!!

That might work out to your advantage.
Here's my suggestion - Don't try to get him to admit he was wrong, but casually mention how much time the car spends at the dealer then later casually mention something you'd like (all weather floor mats, new PSP, whatever works for you). He might try to make up for his mistake if you leave him an 'out' where he doesn't look ridiculous.
....and according to that same logic if you make him look ridiculous he'll resent it.
...but what would I know... being a dad to only three kids.

Ok. I was way wrong. Somewhere between the shop and home I picked up a plastic bag on the cat. That's the burning smell I got. Has nothing to do with the flooding.
BTW - The service rep told me that Mazda has a kit for the flooding. It consists of the new starter and plugs. From my invoice it looks like its part number N3Y1-18-S70. The battery was separate. The car cranks and starts much quicker now. Its a nice fix.

Also, the better way to shut it down it to is to rev it up to 4k for a few seconds, and kill the ignition while holding revs. The oil metering pump continues to protect the motor, while the excess fuel is expelled.

hang this sign on your steering wheel when you park
WARNING!!!
Do not shut off this car's engine if it hasn't warmed up yet! Either:
- Rev the engine to 3000 RPM for 10 seconds right before shutting it off.
- Let it warm up to normal operating temperature (should take about 10 minutes, depending on ambient temperature). Then you can shut it down normally.

'feature' ahha. I'll keep you all posted on the lemon law case. If I knew I would suffer with such a feature, I probably would have kept on looking. But i'm stuck with it now, so I'll deal. Kudos for those who don't have to deal with such an issue. I didn't ask the dealership what they've done with the car, I figured they are tired of watching my car get towed in so often. As for those who say sell it, it'll sure be up for sale before the warranty is up.

I have close friends with Lexus products, Mercedes products, BMW products, Audi products..........believe me, nothing Mazda makes is in that league as far as luxury is concerned.
Should a fun sports car have flooding issues?? Well, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't have flooding issues........as long as you follow some simple preventative steps. Is allowing your engine to warm that much of an inconvenience?? Is revving the motor a little prior to shut off that difficult?? You same people must hate checking the oil at every other fill-up also......but you probably don't do that either.

Firstly I consider myself a rather conservative person and therefore believe in personal responsibilty but let's not throw common sense and logic out the window, please. The attitudes toward the majority of those who have flooded is quite hostile in general. Because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it won't. Because you are a lover of rotaries or up to speed with the necessary rituals doesn't mean that eveyone else needs to be. Lot's of ordinary people bought these cars (Not just weirdos like us). A lot of women have bought them, a lot of business people, all kinds of people. Part of the point that the Goober was making is that some bought this car while considering cars like G35s and Lexus IS and BMW3 series. A certain percentage of them have had bad experiences and will not return to Mazda. My problem with that is, my strong interest in the health of Mazda and the hope for the continuation of the rotary is put in jeopardy by the problems of the present car. There are people in high places who would like to see it go away and there are people in high places who would love to see it thrive. There are some carefully evaluating with nothing but dollars and sense as a guidline. This thing is bigger than some of you realize and by that I mean the whole asessment picture but I would like to add to that the flooding deal.
I have the right to speak on this topic since I own 5 Mazdas including 2 RX7s and an RX8 and no, I haven't flooded.

CERAMICSEAL is correct - the issue of flooding does threaten the future of the rotary engine. Of all the major manufacturers - only Mazda has struck with the rotary. The Rx-8 has to be a success in the marketplace - or it will die outside of Japan and Australia IMHO.
As you can see I'm a Mazda fan - check my signature - dating back to my first RX-7 in 1985 to now - owning four Mazdas.
But the market really expects a modern $30,000 car - sports or otherwise - to start without question or special treatment for the first 5 years - usually the length of the payments.
I just got back from the dealer - had a new battery / starter / plugs - I really hope this is the end of hard starts and flooding for me. If not I'll just deal with it but the market will not.
I love the RX-8 - but do fear for its future.

I had the latest flash - no re-flash I can see on receipt. The car had been a lttle hard to start - a few seconds --- then not driven for about two weeks - re-started OK after not being driven - but the next AM flooded. Had to charge battery three times during re-start attempts. A ton of smoke.
Now seems to start instantly after the recent work.

Sounds good. I wish they were like this from day one.
The other thing is there are dealers who did some of these things but not all in the past, a recipe for a repeat flood. Mazda wasn't sure how they wanted to deal with this problem in the past, sometimes opting to only pay for some and not for others. The penny pinchers and bean counters had better count the cost in lost customers and potential customers. Batteries and starters are a joke in comparison.

"No Start" has been a central issue on many safety recalls - interesting that the issue of flooding without warning has not ben raised to that level.
Even if not Mazda should update all RX-8 to the new battery / starter and plugs IMHO.

Bought mine in Sept '03.
40,000mi - no problems.
Wife borrows car (knows all about warm-up issue).
Uncle moves car 30' to plow driveway = flooded and stuck in NH!
Mazda is really saying don't buy this car if:
1. You live somewhere with tandem parking.
2. You might have a valet park your car.
3. You have to leave your car somewhere for service.
You shouldn't have to have someone sign a letter-of-understanding before you give them your keys.
It's an awesome car as long as you never let anyone else touch it.
Has anyone been able to re-start using the published procedure without having to go to the dealership?

Past Owner :(
I have had my car for about 4 months. I personally have not flooded it. I bought it used (03 build date). i took it to get the center console and under the hood painted and I told the body shop how to shut it down properly with the 3k rev. i had a call the next day, they flooded it. after he was done with the work i had it towed and the body shop told me that it was a stupid car and that he would never own one. he actually said to a mazda service person when i called them "you knowingly sell these cars to people?" I wanted to smack the guy. how about this darwinian phrase:
RX-8: weeding out the non-enthuseists since 2004
oh well, i still love my 8

Here is a technique to use to unflood yuor Rx-8.
1.disconnect the air pump so you dont ruin the cats.
2.Hold the gas peddle to the floor.
3.then crank the engine for about 10 seconds, this will clean out the fuel in the cylinders.
4.after you have cleared out the cylinders
5.try cranking the engine
6.if the engine starts get the rpms up to above 2200 rpms, this will finish cleaning out the cylinders.
7.If the car doesn't start, try the proccedure again

How do you mean, 'tick'? I'm not sure what you're asking there.

swear, curse (helps to defrost windows), hit steering wheel....
"rrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, nothing" cough, cough, stutter, shudder, bang, vroom.
Anyway, the words my dealer used were "hard starting" so when the starting seems dicey enough that I can claim severely hard starting I'll call my dealer and see if they agree to the replacement. If you really believe you're in danger of flooding out due to failed cold starts I suggest you do that now. So far, I'm not really concerned, just mindful.
