How bad is bad when it comes to gas mileage?

I posted a thread in the Canada Forum mentioning that I am only averaging 250KM per tank (I usually shift at around 4000rpm--rarely higher). 'Rotary Titus' replied that he gets 360-400km per tank. My car has 2000KMs on it. I knew going in that the 8 is hard on gas, but this seems ridiculous relative to the power output. Is 250KM per tank excessively low? Does my car have a major problem? From what I have read in various threads, it seems like there is quite a bit of variance between individual cars when it comes to fuel consumption--this should not be the case.

Don't get me wrong; I LOVE the car, but this is a bit frustrating (it is not a money issue, but this car produces fun, high revving, linear power, not MAJOR gas guzzling power). I'd be happy with anything over 300KM per tank--hopefully things will improve as the mileage increases.

The very worst I've ever had with the car is 141 kms on 26.658 litres which works out to 18.9 litres/100km (or 14.4 mpg Canadian or 12.0 mpg in US gallons). This is pretty bad but was all stop and go city driving. Even if I had driven the full tank (60 litres), I still would have been at 317kms.

So far, I'm averaging 13.4 litres / 100 km over the 10,700 kms I have on the car. That's 20.3 mpg in Canadian gallons, or 16.0 mpg in US gallons. This is combined city and highway. There's a vast difference though in my car between city and highway mileage. And my mileage is steadily decreasing given the winter cold.

Hope that helps TCZ.

You need to do a search of the forum for a recent thread that has volumes of information on representative fuel mileages. Lots of data with spreadsheets and graphs. However, the short answer to your question is that your mileage stinks. Most of the data posted in that thread shows that most owners are getting around 18-20 MPG. (That's MILES not kilometers and gallons not litres, you'll have to do the conversions.)

EDIT: Here's the link to the fuel mileage thread. Page through it for lots of good data.

That's pretty nasty mileage, when I was breaking my car in I would get 400-410kms per tank when the amber light turned on, like you I was not revving past 4000RPM. Depending how much fun I decide to have with it now I will get between 340 - 380 kms per tank but also I have snow tires on and am not pushing that hard, although I do pull quite a number of redlines.

A guy that works next door to me has one and he's been getting 250 kms per tank like you, I asked him what flash he was on and he had a puzzled look on his face (obviously not a member). He still had the original flash from when he bought it in 2003.

I mainly do short commutes in the city, which I know is a contributor to the poor mileage. But even when I did a couple of longer highway trips I barely eeked out 300km (186miles) to a tank. To make things worse, I am consciously restraining myself (shifting before the fun starts) to see how much of a difference it makes (which sucks!), but nothing has helped.

You guys are depressing me!!! I would be thrilled with the kind of mileage you're getting!!! Which brings me back to an original point: what is wrong with my car??? Last week I recieved a notice about upgrading the flash to help with flooding issues (mine's never flooded, although I've had some hard, cold starts), so when I take it in I'll ask some more questions, but, to be honest, it seems like the dealers don't have half as much info as the guys on this forum.

No problem. I made the list because sorting them out is time coonsuming and since it is an issue I am dealing with I wanted to streamline it.
