HELP! Rx-8 won't shift into 1st or 6th gear

Hey,
I haven't been around much lately,
but basically my Rx-8 is a 2004 with 40k miles on it and runs perfectly.
Except that the other day after going for a spirited drive the tranny literally locked up on me. I couldn't change into any gear, not even reverse and it wouldn't budge from the center.
But then afterwards it started working, but it's now really hard to get into first gear and it won't even try to go into 6th. It does it when the car isn't even on, it just won't go in. I doubt I blew the tranny or any of the gears.

So, I don't know what it is and my only guess is that it could be that the shifter cable is messed up?
how much is it to replace and is it hard cause damn this is my daily driver and I'm trying not to drive it because I don't want this to get worse.

Any help is welcomed

P.S. the car will go into reverse perfectly fine and goes into every other gear, but just doesn't shift into 6 at all and doesn't even want to go there. And first sometimes grinds and i really have to push it in there for it to stay in 1st gear.

changed the fluid to Redline around 12k miles ago...
I was at like 27-8k miles when I got it done.
If I blew the tranny that's retarded because i don't think that could even be an indication.
I'm taking it to the garage tomorrow

Funny you said this; I actually just had this same problem and mazda wanted me to spend an arm and a leg for their oem clutch. They want 675 just to drop the tranny to CHECK if it was the clutch. I told them no way. Took my car to a friend that has a benz/bmw shop and had my clutch pedal replaced. He showed me the pedal and explained that the clutch was actually great but the pedal kit became thin or something of that nature. I dont have much car exp but i swear about 2 weeks ago my car wouldnt shift into any gears just as you described it. Try turning on the car and and slam on the clutch really fast while attemping to shift into 1st gear. I have an 04 by the way and to fix that problem i only paid 130 for part and another 100 for install. Good luck

Have you had the clutch pedal recall taken care of?

sorry for the late reply
but why would it be the clutch?
My clutch believe it or not is perfectly fine and there's no movement whatsoever from left to right
but what I don't get is why doesn't it shift even when the car is off, i doubt it has nothing to do with the clutch itself as I've just bled it and looked at the pedal which seems to be fine.

I went to the garage and they said that it had to do with the shifter mechanism, that's why I can't go into first properly and not letting me go into 6th at ALL.
I don't remember the whole conversation but it had to do with the bolt (i know it's not the right word) or something that would stop me from going.
Also, which I just realized, when I start off normally, the car tends to shake when I'm in gear. Not like the engine is about to die off or like at idle, but more like a rocking sensation.
But if I'm in neutral it doesn't do it when im rolling at a slow speed.
But if I put it into 1st gear and push the clutch all the way the car will do it.

It's really strange and I'm not sure what to do.

Yeah lol **** the dealer
I'm not gonna go to them for that kind of stuff
just checking the car is like 60$ -_-
the Garage I go to sent my car to a transmission specialist and he said that it's the shifter that's causing the problem. So I'm going to go by that and get it replaced hopefully. They said it would be about 200-300$ but that's alot better than getting a new tranny :p

you could have checked the gearshift lever your self with 10 minutes of labor and a few simple hand tools

lol thanks for the input
they said it depended, if it was seriously damaged and needed to be replaced or just some simple bolts... which obviously wouldn't be much
i didn't get charged for any of this to get checked btw
sorry I'm not the most mechanically inclined and I know jack all when it comes to transmissions so I'd rather have a specialist to check it out for me.
