Hard Starting, wont idle

Bought a 2004 manual that I swapped the motor in

I replaced:
starter with a new 2006 high rev starter
Battery with Optima 740 cranking amp
New plugs
New Coils

and I borrowed the wires from my beetle
(worked great in the Beetle but rx8 still gets a cyl 2 missfire)
I have been waiting 2 weeks for the wires and it turns out that they only processed the order the third time I had ordered them!

I was able to get the car to start after a lot of cranking and it idled for a little bit but then wanted to die so I would have to blip the throttle.

This motor is from one of our brothers on this website so I really hope he would NOT give me a core with low compression but I am not jumping to conclusions nor do I know the compressions.

need help as I need to get this car running to use as my daily driver!

Thanks in advance

He has a rotary powered Beetle... the engine is from an RX-8, so borrowing the wires from that engine makes sense.

I think compression check will tell you for sure what's the deal... or at least will get you closer to resolution.

thanks for the Beetle thread Bump

So I got the NGK wires in today and installed them

cranked the car over and it took a while to start but I got it going, Would not idle so I kept it just under 2k until the coolant was up to temp. as soon as it was warm I slowly took my foot off the pedal to see if it would idle and then it stalled!

Did NOT throw a missfire code so that is good

but now I have bank 1 lean code!

Is there anyway to correct this problem or did I buy a bad motor?

Check all the usually suspects.
I would start with cleaning the Eccentric Shaft Sensor. Do the reset steps (aka 20 brake pedal stomp and holding Odometer thing down IIRC)
Clean Maf sensor.

Only sure way to tell if the engine is toast is to do a compression test
You need to check a few more things first.

So it sounds like an engine swap that you've done .... did you check everything is hooked back up .... stuff like the Baro sensor not being hooked up caused my car to start easy enough but it would idle ....
Vacuum leak check?

Soooo you bought a used motor without a compression check mmmmmmmmmmmm
Sounds like a gamble to me

the ess looks very clean
I had done the reset
When car started first time I looked for any vacuum leaks and did not find anything
double checked everything was properly installed and connected
swapped the MAF from the Beetle(Rotary Powered- I guess I should have said that when talking about the wires too)

The car sounds like wants to start after about 3 seconds of cranking but just can't!

Would starting fluid help to see if it is a fuel problem? The car was sitting for a while with the tank on E and I put 2gal of fresh gas in it.

Can you swap over the fuel injectors from your ReneBug?
Maybe one of the injectors is causing the issues.

BC.

well Went to the Mazda dealer to get compression check. The dealer is 6 miles from my house and I was able to putts it about 5miles where it would just not give anymore! So towed it a whopping 1 mile!

Mazda did the compression check and it turns out the rear rotor is below par so BAD and the front rotor wont even give a reading!!!!

In process of communicating with the person I bought the motor from, not naming him at this time
