The techs determined that the cat was the problem on my car by removing the cat and going to straight pipes. the CEL, hesitation and loss of power went away that I was experiencing. They said from looking at the cat though it was not obviously defective.

Good luck on getting a new cat.
After a flooding procedure, they are supposed to run the car (at certain speeds for certain amount of time) and then pull the info from the car's computer to see if the cat is within' spec.
Texas8: Did your dealership do that procedure or are they just going to replace it anyways?

BTW, just got off the phone with Texas Department of Motor Vehicles consumer complaint hotline and apparantly in the state of Texas dealers ARE required to disclose any repairs or damage done prior to purchase. Especially on new cars.

Well, I have gotten my local dealer to buy back my car. Sorry to see it go, I loved her and I'm going to miss her. But, it's the principal of the matter. It's bad business practice what they did and anyone who disagrees, so be it...

Ooooh, the dealer tightened the seat bolts prior to delivery, if the mug who buys it finds out he might bring the car back 12 months later.....the salesman leaves the key on in the showroom and the battery goes flat, but the Service Manager doesn't tell the buyer he recharged it.....

I've said it before and I'll say it again. In MY eyes (and I'm very adament about customer service) when I buy a new car, I expect it to be a NEW car. Not one that has 2 1/2 hours of labor already performed on it. If you don't have a care in the world as far as what has happened to your $30,000 automobile before you purchased it that's your opinion. Poor dealer?? Yeah, he's really going to take this one in the ***...
Let me ask you something, when someone buys a new car what does everyone say he/she should do?? Get a car history report, right? Why in the hell should it be any different because it's a new car? Tightning bolts, recharging the battery, replacing a busted rim/tire, etc.. is not in the same category of a flooded engine. The way you speak, you must think that I would take it back for every minor detail. If that was the case I would have done so long ago. I have tried to keep it from flooding and have succeeded for over a year only to find out some jackass working for Mazda already had flooded it coming off the boat... **** that, it isn't right and I won't/didn't stand for it. As I said earlier.....new plugs, new cat....same as a new car! If they changed the cat, and all indications are that they were going to do that, then you have nothing to worry about.
I really feel you are letting your mechanical ignorance color your decision here. You have recieved sound advice from those here on this forum and you have chosen to ignore it.

its the front catlayst broken out of its spot in the converter. this is exactly how it was found by the person who's finger can be seen in the picture. this particular car did throw a cat code finally.

Digging out an old thread here after a search for Cat Failure and just building on this thread instead of starting another.
I am wondering if the ECU will always throw an error before any cat failure that could be catastrophic?
Or, can a cat go bad and cause worse damage before you know it?
And lastly, are there any other symptoms besides loss of power or a rattling sound underneath the car, of a cat going bad? If so, what are they?
I have no issues and am not looking for any but am curious.
