The techs determined that the cat was the problem on my car by removing the cat and going to straight pipes. the CEL, hesitation and loss of power went away that I was experiencing. They said from looking at the cat though it was not obviously defective.

Good luck on getting a new cat.
After a flooding procedure, they are supposed to run the car (at certain speeds for certain amount of time) and then pull the info from the car's computer to see if the cat is within' spec.

Texas8: Did your dealership do that procedure or are they just going to replace it anyways?

The service writer said that the mechanic performed all the tests that were necessary. Does that include the test you speak of?? Good question. Unfortunately, when I picked up the car it was after hours and the mechanic had already headed home and we couldn't verify with him as far as the testing specifics. I figured, either way, I get a new cat out of the deal.

good grief- thats not directed at you Texas. did they not have paperwork prepared to give you that showed what had been done so far?

Nope. The service writer said he had the original ticket and would just hold onto it until the cat came in and they finished the install. I didn't see a problem with it at the time seeing how I was getting a new cat. In hindsight....

BTW, just got off the phone with Texas Department of Motor Vehicles consumer complaint hotline and apparantly in the state of Texas dealers ARE required to disclose any repairs or damage done prior to purchase. Especially on new cars.

well then you have a legitimate complaint. what recourse does it spell out when they dont disclose?

TBD. According to the individual I talked to once I complete the necessary paperwork they will assign an investigator to look into the situation and we will go from there.

I don't know the particulars yet but I will soon. This is the can of worms that should have been opened long before now. And I won't give up until something is done about it. I'm very persistant and pursuasive when I need to be...

Well, I have gotten my local dealer to buy back my car. Sorry to see it go, I loved her and I'm going to miss her. But, it's the principal of the matter. It's bad business practice what they did and anyone who disagrees, so be it...

Good luck with whatever you get next. Glad I'm not selling you a car. Where does the poor bloody dealer draw the line? Ooooh, the dealer tightened the seat bolts prior to delivery, if the mug who buys it finds out he might bring the car back 12 months later.....the salesman leaves the key on in the showroom and the battery goes flat, but the Service Manager doesn't tell the buyer he recharged it.....

I've said it before and I'll say it again. In MY eyes (and I'm very adament about customer service) when I buy a new car, I expect it to be a NEW car. Not one that has 2 1/2 hours of labor already performed on it. If you don't have a care in the world as far as what has happened to your $30,000 automobile before you purchased it that's your opinion. Poor dealer?? Yeah, he's really going to take this one in the ***...

Let me ask you something, when someone buys a new car what does everyone say he/she should do?? Get a car history report, right? Why in the hell should it be any different because it's a new car? Tightning bolts, recharging the battery, replacing a busted rim/tire, etc.. is not in the same category of a flooded engine. The way you speak, you must think that I would take it back for every minor detail. If that was the case I would have done so long ago. I have tried to keep it from flooding and have succeeded for over a year only to find out some jackass working for Mazda already had flooded it coming off the boat... **** that, it isn't right and I won't/didn't stand for it. Like it or not. Stupid or not. I don't give a **** really...

As I said earlier.....new plugs, new cat....same as a new car! If they changed the cat, and all indications are that they were going to do that, then you have nothing to worry about.

I really feel you are letting your mechanical ignorance color your decision here. You have recieved sound advice from those here on this forum and you have chosen to ignore it.

Like a new car maybe, but not the same. My so-called mechanical ignorance is neither here nor there. A new car would NOT be flooded. It's the point of the matter, which really has nothing to do with the fact that the car will more than likely be perfectly fine and have no problems. The point is I should have been informed and was not. That is my gripe, not the mechanical reliability of the car. I chose not to ignore the advice here. I am returning the car because of bad business practices, NOT the car itself. Get it yet???

its the front catlayst broken out of its spot in the converter. this is exactly how it was found by the person who's finger can be seen in the picture. this particular car did throw a cat code finally.

Digging out an old thread here after a search for Cat Failure and just building on this thread instead of starting another.

I am wondering if the ECU will always throw an error before any cat failure that could be catastrophic?

Or, can a cat go bad and cause worse damage before you know it?

And lastly, are there any other symptoms besides loss of power or a rattling sound underneath the car, of a cat going bad? If so, what are they?

I have no issues and am not looking for any but am curious.

Which part of texas are you at, I am in killeen and I have a similar problem with my AT. It happens off and on, whenever I floor the throttle and get it in the high revs I hear this loud rattle right before it shifts, and when it shifts it feels like the car is losing power. Then I would park it for the night and in the morning it would run fine. I have taken it up to the dealership plenty of times but they can't find anything wrong. Its like it doesn't do it when they have it. It did it before I put the typhoon intake on, now since that I put the intake on it does it more but when I take the intake off to take it to the dealership it stops. I know it sounds kinda stupid but any info would be very appreciated.
