It finally happened
Hey Phil, You've probably already considered this, but I was checking out "Theory on cause of turbo renesis failures, by Pettit" and those housings in the photos looked alot like yours, where the apex seal chatters over the spark plug hole. They show a before and after picture where they had run their "modified" housings in race-track driving and there was no chatter or cracks at the spark plug hole. ( I wonder what the mod is?). They also discuss an exhaust port mod aimed at reducing heat. The article is geared towards turbo'd motors, with back pressure causing the temp increase, but aint we increasing exhaust temps also?? Were pumpin out more power at high rpm's, so maybe the turbo mods would help SC'd also.
BTW i've been following this thread from start like it was a TV serial like "DALLAS" . Finding out what killed your engine is like waitin to see "Who Shot JR"

Don't knock a four port, there are a lot of us out there and the early majority in Europe were 4 ports.
Controlling heat involves a good radiator, the mazmart water pump and good fan control.
As Phill said, oil was what caused his issue. With correct tuning and good oil metering it won't be a problem in the future.
Phill I'll post up pics and a small video here in a little bit.

Video from tonight's porting...I didn't stay the whole time so pics and video are not of the finished product. Just thought everyone would like to see what's going on.

Well thanks Todd for that nice video.
As I think I stated before there is not a lot of room to enlarge the exsisting ports. But there is some casting edges that can be taken off for an improvement in flow. That was what we improved on. The primary does have room for enlargement and so they are a bit taller now
Mazda in there engineering and casting of the end and center plates made more area for coolant capacity. Thus making the walls of the ports thin. Hence no room to enlarge them like an older 13B.
Well the end result is Phil will have better flow through the intake and the exhaust ports.
Doe's that make you happy now Phil?

Hey Ray quick question.
Any thoughts on doing rebuilds with the '09 housings and taking advantage of the 3rd oil injection port? Don't know if you can adapt the new OMP to our car or adapt our OMP to the 3rd port configuration.
Just a thought...

Just something I was told but since I have yet to even get my hands on an 09 I could be wrong.
From what I understand the problem would be getting your hands on 09 housings and an OMP. My understanding is Mazda isn't going to be giving access to those for quite some time so your only bet would be to find a wreck.

Hay Flip, I'll make sure that you get a good "look" at the finnished work. We will hold a special meet so everyone will be able to see the end results.
I'll see about getting some pics for you phill before the motor goes back into the car. Sadly I've developed some battery issues in my own RX8 which I have to deal with this week.
If I can snag any photos I'll post them up!

Todd has the Braille battery. Little tiny thing that is no good in my opinion.
Phil I was thinking about Red due to the colors you have under the hood. But then I was telling Ray we should go with the Orange of the BHR logo.
And I'll take some more blurry pics for you.

get a yellowtop, mine's been in there 2+ years taking the abuse of my subwoofers and it's had zero issues.

get back to work Eric! who said you could take a break???
(Phil isn't here, someone's gotta crack the whip)

i just want to point out that these are not seperate issues but are linked together. there is plenty of oil if you dont live in Vegas (etc) and drive a 4 port. there was just not enough oil delivered and not enough oil cooled for those places like Vegas, AZ, Texas etc

No science involved but just reading the posts would make me surmise that the 04 & 05 rotaries (especially 4 ports) are the problem children of Mazda. Where you live also seem to make a big difference on how many miles you get before the inevitable. I can't speak for any but mine but oil does seem to be the culprit
I am on my way to Ray's house now. The engine shall be finalized this evening. As far as I can see into the future.
And yes Ray is not the most adept at taking photos. I should say he would rather work then click pics. But I should have some for you peeps this evening.
