Engine Won't go Over 6k RPM After New Ignition Coil Installation
I had bought the BHR ignition coils some time ago, but like an idiot, I procrastinated on installing them. This past week, I took a roadtrip vacation, and my check engine light started blinking when I went over about 5k RPM. From searching around here, this generally indicates a misfire.
Later, the check engine light stayed on. It had lost a lot of power, had some noticeable lag around 3k RPM, and could barely get to 7k. I checked the engine codes (I use the Torque application on my Android phone with an OBD-II to Bluetooth adapter), and those confirmed a misfire in "cylinder 2" (the app doesn't know any better on that count, but at least I got the information I wanted ).
On top of that, I started hearing a screeching noise, and some smoke came from under the hood at one point. I believe this is due to a bad belt; going to take it to the mechanic on Monday to check that one out.
I really didn't want to, but I didn't see much choice but to drive it 200 miles of highway home with the above problems (and keeping the A/C off in case that belt is the bad one). It could cruise at 65mph, but it lost speed up small hills in 6th gear while using cruise control.
I got home yesterday and installed the BHR ignition coils today. Install went well (big shout out to the BHR team for making it easy enough for those of us who are not too mechanically inclined). I used my OBD-II scanner to clear the fault codes and went for a short drive. Acceleration felt smooth throughout the range, but the engine wouldn't go above 6k RPM.
Is this just a case of the ECU putting a limit on RPM due to the recent faults? In which case, driving normally for a while will clear it away. Or is this still cause for concern?
Also, I replaced my spark plugs as well, and I noticed that the lower plugs were quite a bit more corroded than the tops. Is there a reason for this? Just curious on this one.
