Engine limited to 2K RPM

Help!!

I have a 2004 with 51K on it and today while driving, the CEL came on and the engine throttled down to 2K RPM without any warning. Fortunately, I was able to limp the car home (at 10MPH or less). I'm 45 miles from the nearest dealer, and they've already told me they've never heard of this happening before.
I've disconnected the battery and reset the CEL, but it almost immediatly comes back on once I give it some gas. Before I get taken to the cleaners, has anyone else experienced this problem (or heard of it) and what was your solution? Thanks for any and all help!

sounds like your car went into limp mode.
where are you located? are you able to rent code readers where you live? (ie; not CA)

Dealership has never heard of this? doubt it, sounds like you juts got a service advisor who hasn't been there long.

I think you should get the codes read, that would be step 1.
could be anything from an ignition issue (easy fix) to a clogged cat (slightly more tricky / expensive fix) or an issue with the motor. Tough to know without having diagnostic codes.

right below the big RX-8club banner, you'll see the word search. Click on the arrow, click advanced search
type in SSv open or something similar to that (or even the diagnostic code), below that select search thread titles only and you'll most likely find a few threads dealing with this issue.

to be honest, I haven't looked into it much as I've been fortunate enough to not have it happen to me but you're not alone and I'm sure there is a great deal of info on it here.
good luck.

Too bad we don't have a DIY for determining the real cause of the problem rather than the bandaid catch can approach. I've yet to see a Renesis engine ingest oil, ever. I've torn a few down, intakes were all clean even the APV barrels.

Then would you care to explain why SSV would get dirty and stuck? Or do you know?
