Question Engine Fan Not Shutting Off

Experienced a peculiar thing today. Shut-off the engine after driving home from work, and even tho the ignition was off, the engine fan kept running for some odd reason. I didn't have the A/C running, so that couldn't have been a factor. It was a hot day- about 90 degrees- but i just had all the windows & sunroof open to enjoy the sun.

Anyhow, I went inside the house to get something, came back out a few minutes later, but the fan was actually still running. So, not knowing what else to do, I started her up again, did the 3K rpm 10 second rev, then cut the ignition. And, although it was slightly delayed- meaning it ran for about a minute or so still- the engine fan then shut off.

Has anyone else experienced this or know anything about this? I'm wondering if I need to bring her in to get looked at.

Thanks,
D

It can run for a few minutes, sometimes longer. Mine does it to on really hot days and have kept going for 5+ mins.
Figure it is a natural part of the car that the cooling fans keep running. My Protege use to do it to, though for only a minute.

Heat is a huge concern with these cars, even the FD's suffered during hard spirited drives and would have to pop their hoods to help the built up heat escape.

I get a kick out of, co-workers asking if I left my car running.

No no, thats just the heat cupholders cooling off.

ahhh, i c. well, that's good to know. now that u guys mention it, i recall my friend's FD's entire engine would keep running after cutting the ignition- and not just the fan. and, he told me it was the turbo warm-down. but, since we don't have turbos, i was a bit surprised to see this.

thanks guys! appreciate the quick replies. and, i got to try that "car still running "trick on my co-workers too next time... kekekeke. w/ the heat wave we've been having in so. cal, i'm sure it'll be easy to reproduce this summer...

Turbo timer is different from what we have. His engine will keep running for a while.

On yours, the electric fan will power on when the car is off to try to cool things off till the temps are lower. This is normal and is desirable - you can override it by putting in your key, turning to ACC and then taking the key out, but that is not recommended.

I've noticed this too on my 8. However, it's only been happening regularly recently, and seeing we don't have seasons here where I am (temps are on average 28 celsius all year round), I have to admit I'm a bit concerned.

Don't be. The fan is working perfectly as designed. Just like your body sweats to cool itself. Nothing to be concerned about

thanks again for all the responses everyone.

just an afterthought... i think i know why, sometimes, doing quick searches doesn't always work so well... and, that is because people don't always put the relevant subject headings in their thread topics. just as an example, "weirdest thing happened today," as a thread title really doesn't make it easy for that thread to show up in a simple search. only an advanced search would work. and, yah- it's still not an excuse for not searching. but, just an observation i guess.

go to google.com, type in:

site:rx8club.com <search term>

e.g; site:rx8club.com weirdest thing happened today

The SQL searches in board software are never the best. They either get hung up on fulltext searching, or try to create tokens of each word and search through that. Omitting short words by default.

Thanks for the information all, especially Zoom. I have been having the same issue, living in Florida and all and not having had the car long enough to know just how hott it gets in the summer. I did know that it would run the fan when the car was shut-off, but I did not realize that it would run for up to 15 minutes. I thought 5 minutes was the max so I was turning the key to ACC to stop it thinking that there was an issue. Again I am glad that all of you on this site help us Rotary Noobs learn more about the cars everyday and help clear our minds when we have brain farts.

I have read several threads on this subject and always wondered why mine never stayed on when it was really hot. Well today it hit about 100 in NY. I drove to the gas staion and through the touch free wash (about 10-15 minuites driving in total) and when I pulled in the garage and shut it off, the fan ran for at least 5-10 minutes. I'm so happy now I know it actually works

I know its mentioned in the manual. It states that once activated, the fan will run for 10 minutes even if the car is turned off.

Its perfectly Normal, my fan stays on for like 10-15 minutes sometimes, sometimes after some hard ..... faster than Grandma's driving. The fan stays on even longer !~ and sometimes in order to speed the process up, I lift my hood up for 5 minutes or so.

This hardly happens during winter and I WONDER why .... hhehehehehehehehe

Don't drive so hard , and don't force the fan to turn off (it's running for a reason). A brief low rpm cruise to cool down always helps, as the water pump is functioning. The fans running after shutdown only help the natural circulation of the system, which isn't nearly as effective.

97-100F here yesterday. No fans running after shutdown for me.

I also noticed that if I do regular driving after some spirited driving they don't run.

I also noticed if I turn off the AC about 1 minute before I will be cutting the car off they don't run either.

Had The Same Thing Happen To Me After Putting 8000 Miles On The Car. Strange, When Its Humid And Hot It Hasn't Run After Shut Off. When It Was Cooler & Less Humid It Kept Running.

Only Has Happened 2 Times. Nice To Know Its Suppose To Happen. Thanks Everybody For The Comfort Level!!

I had my car in a couple of weeks ago for some TSBs and the service writer told me that my fan was staying on much too long and that there was a TSB out for it and they repaired it? Whatever they did, I don't notice the fan staying on any more and it's been over 100 degrees here every day for months.
