dreaded CEL.......:(

hi guys, hoping someone could help me please...

just recently bought a new rx8 (my 2nd one now) however this one seems to have a few issues i need to work out.

firsty ive got the dreaded CEL light, been into mazda and there diognostic machine reads the generic code P0300 which we know means single/ramdom missfire. however thats all it will tell us. i must add that they did a compression test and its all good there, checked plugs, coils & leads all OK!! They have confirmed that i have the old starter N3H1 which is failing so ive just ordered a replacement N3Z1 (later model). i was hoping somebody might be able to confirm if the poor starter which is failing could cause the CEL to flash/stay-on????

i must add that she drives great, no idle issues when stopped/stalling or heavy vibration. However when i start it after leaving it for more than maybe 4 hours or more its starts but is extremely ruff e.g. when starting a car from cold it idles high as standard then slowly comes down over a few mins however mine will idle lower than u would expect mybe 1,500-2,000rpm with heavy vibrations and jump around slightly, very strange after the normal timeframe it will idle fine and it drives OK!!

If anyone can help me brainstorm or work this out i would be extremely greatful

lexx

Check and clean your ESS
Always a good idea to clean your MAF and IAT sensors
Does neutral switch or clutch switch have any effect?

The old starter will not cause a misfire.

If the switches are going bad then the idle would change with the clutch in vs. out or when in neutral vs. in gear with clutch depressed.

Like you said i dont believe its the starter there are other symptoms of a failing starter. as far as the clutch switch you have to watch when you look out for the change in rpm. i would wait till your car is warm up to temp and when idle is normal. if you check it when its cold and the car is running at higher idle then you usually do notice a little idle drop when letting out the clutch but not when normal idle it should not move. unfortunately i know you said these were good but i would check your spark plugs, spark plug wires, and coils. i dont even really think there is a way to check your coils but they can go bad without any visible signs. when i pulled and replaced my plugs for my new bhr coils i noticed my spark plugs were very fouled at the ends. do you know the last time these were replaced or even cleaned?? also i noticed when i got my new duel purpose optima battery i couldnt tighten my positive terminal down quite enough and that was causing rough idle. just a though to check them also for kicks and giggles.

thanx for all the advice guys

OK...... ive been back to mazda and had another diognostic done and the missfire is comming from clyinder 1. So in a nutshell im going to replace all the coils as number 1 & 2 are showing slight signs of arking. im also going to replace the HT leads and for the plugs mazda had them out again yest and they look almosy new so there kool. i mentioned that ive bought a new version starter (second hand but 100% working code N3Z1) Its currently working its way to me now hoping with the new coils & leads this resolves all this Turd!!

As for idle, she idles fine all the time its just from cold start when this issue occurs.

Anyways im gona look on the net for a coil and lead set so if anyone could direct me to and good/cheap shops etc i`d be very greatful, ive found a place that will do the coils for £200 dont know if u know any better deals out there??

CHEERS GUY for all ur help/advice, and as for giving back check out Kazantip-republic.com dont know if its ur thing but me and my business partner are co-running it this event year and if anyone decides to venture there il make sure to have a russian escort and AAA passes on stand by lol

i would just go with the bhr ignition coils. comes with msd ignition spark plug wires too and dont quote me on this but said to last longer. i installed them myself and noticed stable idling and improved throttle response. these coils are well worth the money and in the long run will probably pay themselves off with the better gas mileage and longer lasting coils. and im not trying to sell them to you just think there worth the little extra coin.

cheers Rick.

i ended up ordering the coils from a online shop, got the set of 4 for £110 with 1 yr garentee also the seller has sold loads of these sets all with great feedback, he cant list them as genunie mazda coils due to legel reasons (buying abroad etc) however i gave the boss a bell n he confirmed they are cant argue with that!!

going to a friends shop later to pick some HT leads then booking car in for getting it all on. if all this doesnt work im stumped.

alrite fellas

well where do i start, ive had it in the shop n had new coils, leads, plugs & starter all fitted. firstly the starter is much better - no doubt about that however the dreaded CEL is back once again and its here to stay!!

i am truley stumped fellas, ive been on every related link on here and i cant get a clear answer. just for ***** and giggles i reset the ESS (20 pumps on the brake) it reset but didnt help this situation. didnt think it would but was worth a shot!!

as you guys can imagine im not chuffed with spending money on things that dont need replacing however this CEL is winding me right up ;-(

what u guys think??

cheers

hi, no i havent done anything with the ESS apart from the reset. i have just ordered a set of plugs, didnt change them with the leads & coils due to mazda telling me they were all good however it leaves me thinking that since the coils & leads are new and the compression is sweet then could be as simple as the plugs are gone. will find out when they arrive and i get em on!!

as for the motor mounts im sure they are alrite, will see if these plugs change anything then go from there, will keep u guys posted, cheers
