a different 2nd gear question

ok welp lately on a hard down shift to 2nd it grinds. now here are the different things about it. it goes from 1st to 2nd easily no matter what. hard soft it doesn't matter. when everything is cold it downshifts easily into second. and if i push in clutch and let revs fall it won't grind. but basically anything over like 3-4k when warm and downshifting it grinds. i'm begining to thing its my clutch. as in its now completely disengaging. i ordered a SS clutch line and plan to install and than rebleed/adjust my clutch.

does my diagnosis sound correct or what? any imput would be awesome
btw it already has royal purple fluid in the tranny no leaks either

thanx in advance

but if it was the synchro wouldn't it affect upshifting?

Shift fork might be gone, if its synchro it should grind on both upshift and downshift. Try double declutch rev match to see if it still grinds.

i did i tried revmatching and no luck. still grinds but only hot i'm thinking the clutch line is just swelling when it warms up. and it seems like engine has to be completely deceled to go in but like i said only when hott

no way your clutch line is flexing that much, my money is on the SS clutch line making little difference on resolving this issue ... you should try bleeding it first before the swap, if you do both at the same time you can't be sure which one helped if it corrects the problem

if it is your clutch line then it will grind every gear up or down, not just second, it is the synchro that is going bad.
when you up shift the rpm will drop so easier and no grind.
but down shift will raise the rpm so harder to go in and grind.

well today i tried the upshift thing i rev up first to redline than depressed clutch all the way till the rpms went to idle than put it into 2nd with no problem at all. dunno if that tested the synchro at all or what. if it is synchro why does it only do it when its warm. and i did try it when it was cold today. nothin. this is really bugging me it will only downshift into second under 35-40mph this is with or w/o rev matching. very strange.

You test the synchro by double declutching, if it doesn't grind then your synchro is bad (if it grinds without double declutch).

That’s the way my second gear problem started.. From time to time when it was hot. I actually thought I was not depressing the clutch pedal all the way but later learned that was not the case. Since I don't beet on my car every day it was fine most of the time with the occasional flare up. As time went on it seems to have gotten worse until I lost second gear altogether after a 300 mile run to NC. It still acts fine when it's not warm but now with the warm weekend we have had it's doing it again and at lower running rpms. I have an appointment take it in to the dealer on Monday. I was told they will check the fluid for filings and it they find any they will order me a new tranny. The only problem is I still won’t know what the problem is and how to stop it from happening to the next tranny. What ever I do learn I'll get back to U with.

I know I'm asking for trouble but ,,,, does any one think it might be the gear oil thinning out? or maybe it not being properly filled enough?

No but I had a smell for a long time (like others) that turned out to be a leak in the top tranny seal. I don't know how much gear oil was lost the 8 or so months it took the dealer to actually fine the problem or if they checked the level before replacing the seal and buttoning the hole thing up. I do know that they clamed that they couldn't find it right away. something to the effect that they couldn't tell where it was coming from because gear oil was all over the tranny.
I'm noticing that heat plays a factor and the longer I rum my engine the worse it gets. I have spoken to the tech guy at the dealer and he things if it were due to the clutch line expanding,, the problem would be across all gears and not just second. So i'm stil a lil perplexed on what stered the hole thing. Have U learned anything new?

OK,,, Heres the skinny on the roomer of a TSB for the second gear trouble; U will not find this under a TSB. only mazda deareships can get this because it need a code or something. But,, it's under the heading of MTOL-4254 Dealer Repair Information 'HARD TO SHIFT, NO SHIFT 1-2, 2-1'. and states that there are some MT's that experience shifting concerns in and out of 2nd to 1st. and that the cause may be a cracked or bent 1-2 shift fork. there was a list of things the dealer has to go through like verification of problem, checking PP bolts, before taking the tranny apart for visual inspection and so on... There was also something about a stroger shift fork to be installed. So, I don't think they will give U a problem if U have a mod exaust and cold air but again that all depends on the dealer.

As far as my tranny goes,,, the inpsection was Pos.so that are odering the new shift form before droping and opening the unit up. if there is no other damaged parts they wil replace the fork and i'll be on my way. If however, they find more parts to fix then they will try to give me a new tranny. I will try and find out if all the forks can be beefed up and if so maybe have them do all of them. I guess this would be the time to beef the clutch up and lighten the flywheel if I ever want to, huh.
