Decating

Hi guys,

My catalic convertor died. Iīd like to decat my RX-8. I donīt want to buy a new one. What can I do? When I use a decat pipe, do I need to make any aditional changes to avoid the "check engine" light being illuminated?

Thanks for your advise.

Peter

Buy yourself a gas mask. Also gas masks for all your neighbors.

You can pull it off and hollow it out with a long crowbar. Or you could buy a cat-free mid pipe.

Also follow kens advice, rotary engines have wicked exhaust fumes.

I kinda like the smell, its not that bad at all really. I think if you buy a high flow cat you should be able to avoid the cel and still get some gains.

Peter,
what are the emission laws in your state? Are the local cops very vigilant when it comes to modified cars?

The smell is a DEAD GIVEAWAY on our cars, it'll also get louder if you hollow out the OEM catalytic.
If you swap that out for a straight pipe, your car will be insanely loud.

Our laws are strict, but cops are lazy, so I donīt really care about the emissons.

I do really worry about the engine light illumination. What about the power and consumption. Does it change when I replace the cat for the straight pipe?

Thanks

I cant say exactly what power you will gain but there are gains to be had. I think a 100% straight pipe will give the most gains, then next in line would be a midpipe with resonators. Thats just from what I have seen on here.

You have an s1 rx8 so your next mod could be a cobb access port and then you would be able to get your car tuned and also get rid of that cel forever.

I have been pulled over and had a cop come up and walk behind my car to the passenger side, he never said a word about the smell.
