But they can and do leak, and the points about having the washer yield instead of the drainpain threads is also valid, which I only touched upon with the torque reference.

you don't NEED to replace the crush washer, you also don't NEED to bleed your brakes when putting in new pads, you don't NEED to take shower daily, and you certainly don't NEED to eat at fancy restaurants.

Its more of a, why not do it because you certainly can.

I replace my crush washer with my oil changes at every 3k, I mean seriously its $.30 and requires as much effort as wiping your own ***.

Because it might leak. It's a gasket, and it's generally good practice to not re-use gaskets.

But it seems that routinely replacing the washer is a relatively new practice, like maybe just the last 20 or 25 years. In my youth when I'd take the car to the gas station and shoot the breeze with the mechanic while he changed the oil, I don't remember anyone ever using a new washer. I had cars where the original washer eventually wound up paper thin, but still worked.

It wasn't until I started buying filters at dealers, and the parts guy would ask if I wanted the washers, too, that it dawned on me that they should be changed.
