Could this be the oil pressure sensor?

Okay I bought myself a 2005 RX-8 not too long ago. The car was bought from Copart so there was damage done to her. Anyway long story short. The bodywork has been done to it and now being able to drive her, the car won't go past 3000rpms when driving her, in any gear, when in neutral is SLOWLY gets up to 6000 (7 seconds or so)... I took it to one mechanic and he said it was the fuel pump.. changed that and nothings changed. Took her to another mechanic and this guy calls me today, said he was finally able to hook her up to the computer and get the code for the CEL, and says I have a bad Oil pressure sensor. Now he's giving me a quote of $1500...

Could this in fact be the problem? And is this the right price? Can I buy a used one?

Thanks.

EDIT: the CEL code is 1688... metering oil pump switch

Wink Sense.....

The oil pressure sensor is below and behind the oil filter, better to access from below.

....and it looks like your average $9 piece-of-****, take it off and get to AutoZone!

I had a feeling something was wrong when he told me a sensor cost $1500. How much would a new oil pump run me?

I'm going over there now and have a word with him. I'll also try and get the CEL code.

Thanks for the help.

Does is necessarily have to be the metering oil pump?

Can the sensor be cleaner? may it be a wire that can be replaced?

My mechanic doesn't have experience with RX-8's so he might not know the exact problem.

Thanks.

Try unplugging the plug on the pump unit...and plugging it back in. Reset the ECU and see if it goes away. It may have been rattled when the accident happened. The car goes into "limp home mode" when the MOP fails. That's why you have no power...and the RPM's are limited

^^ what he said.

Metering Oil pump is a pump(of course) that's controlled by the ECU. It detects your Engine load (SpeeD) and your Throttle position so it can supply the correct amount of Engine Oil to the Combusion process(To lube)

That part is expensive. IF the impact actually damage the MOP, its a pretty *serious* impact and I think you should check and see if the PPF still in good shape.

Everytime you start the car(Actually running and off), it does alot of self-check to see if everything is ok. If something is wrong, depends on what it is you might get a CEL right away(MOP failure is a serious issue, btw)
