Could the car be flooded while it's moving?

So I was driving at like 50mph, car made a blown tire noise and engine started running rough. Pulled to the side and the car cranks but won't start.

Called a tow back home and tried to start it again, looked up a bit and thought the symptom might be engine flooding.

Now I tried the de-flood procedure found online. (Pump brakes 15 times, pulled fuel fuse and relay, floored the gas and tried to crank it.) It took a couple of attempts but it started back up again albeit running very rough. Then I tried to let go of the gas and the car just died again. Won't start after that.

Any ideas?

p.s. gears have been hard for a couple of occasions and one time it just wouldn't engage in any gears at all, (but does while the engine's off), but that problem went away and kinda fixed itself. looked up and some guys say it's the clutch bracket? but i when i took it to firestone for alignment the mechanic said it's the clutch, but i'd assume he doesn't know anything abt the 8s.

Age of coils/plugs/wires? Given my recent predicament, i'm willing to bet a coil failed.

No turbo. Coils, plugs wires are like 10k miles old tops. Probably even less than that, they were replaced last April, but i rarely drive my car, so i'd say maybe 5-7k miles

It must have made that noise at the exhaust pipe. And to be able to do that, it must have pumped unburned fuel to the exhaust and that points to an ignition failure.

I would check it with brand new IG Coils and spark plugs. BTW, you know there are many fake IG Coils? Make sure that you don't have fake coils, have you seen this topic: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discuss...s-ebay-247265/

Yea, but i let go of the gas before everything was cleared. It was late and I live in an apartment complex, didn't want anyone to key my car the next morning.

Nope, bought the coil from onlinemazdaparts, plugs and wires from amazon prime.

No, it wouldn't flood while driving, any flood is from trying to then start it back up.

I hate to say it, but it almost sounds like a seal let go. Noise from the engine while running, resulting rough running, etc...

If that IS the issue, RIWWP, buying 4 new coils and plugs seems like it might be a waste of money but then I can see two scenarios. Go in for new coils and plugs OR get it towed to a dealer for a compression test.

Sucks man, I hope its the former.

Yeah, it just doesn't sound like coils to me. I can't say I ever heard of them suddenly failing like this.

I don't see how coils even enter in to the discussion here.

Get your compression checked, be prepared for bad news just in case. I hope it's something cheap but it doesn't sound ignition related at all.

unfortunately i would suggest having the engine tested for compression first.

the symptoms you describe with the tire blown sound like an intake backfire, which is very rare for an ignition related failure and more commonly associated with a total loss of compression on a rotor allowing the combustion event to travel back through the intake.
