Hi new here. Tried searching found some good info and stories close to mine but wanted to check. Bought a 04 rx8 and every thing was fine I have all maintenance records its had all recall work done. Its at 60k miles 6 speed tranny. Car drives perfect has power but the first time I really got on it last night I noticed when launching it bogs down for a few seconds then starts going. I can't get the tires to chirp off the line. But once rpms are up above 3k its fine, I can't pull off 2nd gear scratches no problem. Not bad vibration when at idle but some very slight vibration. Plugs where replaced about 20 k miles ago. I'm not sure about coils. Transmission redone 20 k ago as well.my first guess is plugs and coils need replaced.maybe a bad cat? How do you tell if the cat is bad? Any advice is welcome. Sorry for errors I'm using mobile phone for this at work.

Hmm hope that's not the case. I don't think its under warranty.vibration isn't the issue, It only vibrates when the ac is on. I was thinking bad mounts or coils To cause a bog at low rpms but then I tested a 4000 rpm clutch drop just now to see if its only hard acceleration at idle that causes the bog, and still bogged down for a second. Now from a roll like 5 to 10 mph it takes off like a bat out of hell, so I'm thinking mounts or tranny issue.

Should still be under the EXTENDED ENGINE Warranty 8 years and less than 100,000 miles.

Found out plugs were replaced beginning of 08 30k miles ago and I was told coils never been replaced. So that should be a good spot to start. I'll replace them and see if that helps

For what is is worth try to pick your coils up O'REILLY's. They are $37@ lifetime ( bunch cheaper than OEM and have LONGER warranty) warranty and are the newer type right from MAZDA. It is about a 15 minute job if you don't do plugs and wires. Just take the small black silencer of by the air filter and you will see the 4 coils,easy to get too now. While I replaced ours I put a small 1/4 inch nut on the shaft of each coil bolt to raise them up off the plate so they will get more air under them so they would run cooler. The Mazda tech where the kids car is at even liked that ideal!

I still would never buy cheap coils, even if it does have a lifetime warranty.
cheap coil that is not yet proven itself could lead to misfires
misfires = dead cat. (hello $1400 for a new one)
misfires = bye bye motor if you're not careful.

all that to save a few bucks?
no thanks.

At this point it's BHR ignition for those who want the best or OEM coils.

called the dealer they want 72 for each. I searched and didn't see any problem from local auto part stores(cheaper coils) misfire or going out sooner. Did see a few oem coil complaints about going bad prematurely. Guess its hit and miss and depends on other problems the car has

I didn't suggest he do anything, what he chooses to do is his decision. I simply stated that I would not buy those aftermarket coils as we don't have enough data to prove if they're even any better then the OEM's.

But we have plenty of proof that they are the SAME UNITS as OEM.

Buying the same for less just seems like a good thing to do.

That would be like complaining that people buy their NGK spark plugs from Advance Auto Parts instead of the Mazda dealer. Same part, same part number, different source, yet you probably don't have any problem with that purchase.

Why the shift on ignition coils?
