The sensor on the cat itself was about 3 or 4 inches upstream from the front of the guts. also, when we finally got it loose and removed, grey dust and chunks of honeycomb started falling out...

talking about the cat and resonator not the sensor itself. We just left it in the whole time, being careful not to strike it during the sophisticated gutting process...

So do you think all my catalyzer material b4 the sensor was shot? In a properly functioning cat, would you be able to see the sensor inside or would you just see honeycomb? Also, Is this likely the cause of my P0420 code that came up and went away after a few days a couple months ago?

That's what i figured. Why would that code have gone away by itself? And on that note, why is this P0300 still on after several days? Can a new code pop up without knowing if the light is already lit?

Just wanted to let you know that there is no actual testing of the exhaust in NC anymore. They just hook up to your OBD2 system and scan for CELs. If you are running clean, then you pass the emissions part.

You can pass this with a Hi-flow cat, I have passed for the last 2 years. The exhaust definitely has more unburned gasoline vapors when compared to the OEM Cat, but apparently they are not outside of the car's emissions specifications since I have not received a CEL due to emissions once I installed the Hi-flow cat. The hi-flow cat also sounds better and feels better on heavy acceleration (butt dyno improvement, with possible measurable gains).

I also have the BHR coils/wires and absolutely love them. No more unintended drop in RPMS at ~6,000 rpm and definitely a smoother idle. The cost may seem high, but just figure after 2 changeouts of coils/wires/plugs, you are near the cost of the system. And if I'm not mistaken, these coils (BHR) will last for more than 30k miles and are cheaper than the OEM coils to replace. Win/win/win

Anyway, good luck. I'd offer to sell/give you my OEM cat, but that ship sailed about a year ago after the wife told me to clear out the storage room.

Thats good info...thanks. yeah i still have that high flow cat just in case. if i do end up needing that, where would one put the 02 sensor? also i ordered coils from advanced auto for $25 a piece. should i return them and go for the BHRs?

$25/each is not too bad. Are you sure they are compatible?

If you have the cash for the BHR coils, it is a good investment. You will likely never have to worry, or wonder, if your coils are causing you problems.

It has been a great peace of mind for me. Before I ordered the BHR coils, I'd already gone through 4 sets of OEM coils and one failed Cat. My 5th set was still working fine, but I started to look for spares once I fell out of warranty.

Pricing them out with new wires and spark plugs and realized that I'd be doing all that again in 30k miles with intermittent performance problems was not an option for me. I used my tax refund last year and snagged the BHR coil pack.

That upgrade and hi-flow cat are probably my 2 favorite upgrades that I've done.

As for the O2 sensor, there was a bung for it already on the hi-flow cat. there was no extra work necessary. Although my version of the RP supercat is an old one, I believe the placement of the 02 sensor is the same, after the catalyst, as seen in this photo.

If your hi-flow cat does not have that bung location, I'm pretty sure you can get an exhaust shop to put one in for a nominal charge.
