car wouldnt produce spark or power
my Mazda RX8 stopped on motion and refuses to start.I then called the AA, the AA guy checked and said 2 coils were bad/broken. the car was then towed to the garage. after changing the coil with four new ones by the mechanic. The Mechanic then said the car wouldnt produce any power, or produce any spark or supply feul. he tested the coils and all seem to be working. please can anyone tell me what the problem seem to be . thanks
its is a mazda rx8 2004 model, its has just gotten to 78,000 in millage . it was cutting out before it eventually stopped. there wasnt any warning light. the AA guy starting it , it started but wasnt about to produce power when the gas pedal was applied.
no there was no check engine light , the only mod done to the car was the installation of a tracking device, it has got a cat and it made some strange loud noise and was jerking before it went out
The easy answer if it's not providing spark or fuel is the ESS. It is a sensor next to the main front pulley and is what the ECU uses to know when to fire the coils and inject the fuel. If this is heavily fouled, disconnected, wires damaged, or has loosened and dropped farther from the pulley than it should be, you wouldn't get any spark or fuel.
If it's not that, then it will be a combination of other problems. I believe that the ESS is the only item that controls both spark and fuel (downstream of the ECU that is).

Absolutely agree and worth checking and or replacing due to it's ease to get at ...
But still a bit strange that it hasn't thrown a P0335 if it is broke/dirty
Maybe. I could see the ECU not realizing that it's no where near the pulley. Our ECU isn't exactly the most proactive with detecting problems when there are actually problems.
Nothing else I can think of outside of the ECU not getting power or is fried or a severe electrical problem would interrupt both spark and fuel at the same time while cranking.
If it's not the ESS, I'd bet that there is more than one problem here. At that point, yeah, fuel pump would be on the likely culprit list for the fuel side of it.
Of course, it's always possible that the mechanic just thinks there is no spark and no fuel, and it's actually just flooded or something.
