I like the dirty maft idea...I'l recommend it to them...

the dealership just called me and said they would need the car for another week because they put in a request for technical assistance from mazda canada "because they are the experts" (and here I thought the dealership technicians were"...anyway....I've never heard of this before

The dealership says that they have checked all pcm connections, vacuum lines, fuel pressure and have cleaned all of the fuel injectors...

so what does that leave us with? ---> hunting and stalling due to shitty spark?

Hi guys, just an update...its been another three weeks that the dealership has had my car. They are putting in new pcm on friday and if its not the pcm they said it must be something mechanically wrong with the actual new engine they put in.

Can a crappy pcm cause occasional/intermitted stalling?

I would be looking at ESS and the coils and wires and sparkplugs. And the aforementioned MAF sensor.
Do you have a stock catalytic converter on the car? With all this running rich and back firing, I would say you may have an issue with that.

Have they done a compression test on the replacement motor?

That's pretty much it.

If you've eliminated all the sensors (neutral position at trans being one), and there's no air leaks, the O2 sensors are good, the ignition system is new, and they replaced the PCM, then it has to be an internal engine issue.

Compression test.

Thanks guys. I guess they have done two compression tests on the new motor. The first one came back bad, but they claimed they used the wrong tool and redid it properly with the result being a pass. I don't know what to think at this point.

Dealership tech....

Plus in iDS...check codes......swap parts...try again

If there are no codes they are usually lost.....there doesn't seem to be any trouble shooting logic any more

There are a few good diagnosticials around..but they tend to be about the third level that gets to look at the car after the knuckle draggers get done trying to figure it out

Best thng to do is find a dealer tech with a brain...and don't let anyone else look at it at all Or do what I do...only take it there for the stuff I need specialty tools for ( like the iDS to reprogram the ECU ) and get them to let you use it in the parking lot

They pretty much admitted to not knowing what was wrong with the car at all. What a bunch of morons, they're probably shotgun blasting parts at it.
I'd contact your regional mazda rep and tell them how completely unacceptable this is. I Might even look for re-imbursement for rental car/etc.

Are they making you pay for this? If you don't mind me asking, what you've paid for already?
I feel bad you've had to deal with such a shitty dealership. Be sure to fill out a survey (you'll probably have to ask for one) and give them a complete fail with details and facts supporting it. That will get the regional rep's attention.

Haha I forgot I owned a car for a little while! Haha

I was hoping Mazda canada could help. I called th about a month ago and they have been 'investigating' for the last few weeks while repairs on my car stopped. Mazda Canada called me back today and said they are closing the investigation, that it is just a tricky diagnoses that they have their technicians helping my dealerships' and to continue doing the repairs they tell me to.

If I do the latest set of repairs requested I think I will be right around $9000... That of course does not include the Incidental costs to me that have resulted from not having my car for 4 months...

Thank you for sharing in my frustration

WHAT?!!

Lawsuit. It doesn't cost $9000 for a Mazda qualified dealership to fix a Mazda.

Agreed. I'd take them to court. If you decide to do this DO NOT take the car or pay for anything yet. It'll be a while but you should win.

Are you from Toronto by chance? If so, which dealership have you been dealing with? I've been dealing with crap as well and I would love to join forces with you if you happen to be at the same place...

I havnt paid anything except the original new engine bill ($5000 and a bit) ... A lawsuit is always an option, but that won't get me a functioning car... I think after I get the car back il assess my legal position for sure though...

Also, no I am not in Toronto... You have a dealership out there doing something similar?

Once the money is gone, it'll be more difficult. At least consult a lawyer and weigh your options. It's all fun and games, but $4k is a lot of money to not have a working car.

Honestly, you should tell them that you don't trust the new motor Mazda sent them, that they installed, and that you want a new one shipped, installed, on their dime.

Tell them that this is completely unsatisfactory that your car came in for an engine replacement, because that was what failed, and that their replacement engine isn't running any better, with new ignition, and exhaust parts attached to it.

Exactly what CEL's are on the car right now?

And have YOU checked to make sure they installed the spark plugs in the correct location, and that the spark plug wires connect the correct coils to the correct spark plugs? I would hate to think that all of this idle issue was caused because of one plug or wire being misplaced, and no one has gotten off of their high horse to check it by hand...

UPDATE! Cut fuel injector wires, re-wired wrong.....Mazda claims that they have finally fixed my engine. 5.5 months at the shop and they called me to tell me that "they are not pointing fingers, but that the engine harness was modified" they seemed to be implying that I cut the harness. Of course I have never turned a wrench on the car and the retiring nurse that was the only other owner didnt either. So ultimately, what appears to have happened, is that on the original engine removal a mazda technition cut the injector leads, and then re-wired them together improperly. ta-da!!
